The University of Westminster has a strong track record in work allied to healthcare, ranging from laboratory-based research to public health promotion.
Some of our researchers focus on basic bioscience underpinning health at a cellular level, or on the use of biotechnology in a variety of different milieu such as application of biopolymers to regenerative medicine. Other work focuses on diagnostic and therapeutic technology development, such as identification of disease biomarkers and development of in-silico tools for high-throughput drug discovery. This is complemented by work that informs understanding of healthcare at both individual (eg mechanisms of molecular activation in herbal medicine) and social level (eg work on patient experience and public health interventions).
Experienced and research-active staff work in close collaboration with the bio-industry, NHS and other research institutions within the UK, Europe and the US. Our facilities are equipped with state of the art instrumentation.
Our research groups and centres focus on a wide range of disciplines. For example, the Against Breast Cancer research unit, focuses on the identification of factors that influence the ability of breast cancer to spread to secondary organs. The Perspectives in Health grouping brings together work on traditional East Asian medicine; work on patient experience and self-management approaches to health; and promotion of health and wellbeing at the social level.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the research outputs of a number of staff were judged to be at the levels of World Leading (4*) and Internationally Excellent (3*).
