The EU as an International Negotiator

About the project

The EU’s influence on the global stage has increased significantly over the last decades, and much of its global engagement is conducted through negotiations.

The aim of this research project is to advance our understanding of the EU as an international negotiator, by analysing and systematically comparing its role across five key policy areas: trade, development, climate change, enlargement and Brexit.

The project will analyse how the EU operates internally, and how these internal processes affect the dynamics of the EU’s external negotiations. It will enable cross-policy comparisons of the negotiating power and accountability of EU negotiators. The grant will be used towards the conduct of interviews, transcription, and conference participation.
