The Explore Teaching Team trains around 50 volunteers (undergraduates, postgraduates and recent graduates) each year to complete a 15-day placement in a school or college, using their subject knowledge to support small groups of pupils.
Why should my school participate?
Explore Teaching volunteers support the classroom teacher and bring their enthusiasm for learning and passion for their subject to their role. As many of our volunteers are considering applying for PGCE or graduate teaching programmes, they are keen to act as role models for pupils, and to gain a deeper insight into a career in teaching. Extra subject insight provided by undergraduate students can raise pupil motivation and attainment.
The scheme strengthens the link between school and university, raising aspirations to pursue study at degree-level.
What is expected of the school?
The school should have a member of staff responsible for:
- organising the 15 classroom days
- induction to the school and provision of key school policies
- monitoring volunteers’ attendance and staying in touch with them to support and monitor progress
- ensuring that teaching staff understand the benefits of the scheme and the role of the Explore Teaching volunteers
- liaising with the Explore Teaching Team to ensure that both the school and students have a positive experience
How does my school participate?
If you are interested in hosting an Explore Teaching volunteer at your school, please get in touch with the Explore Teaching team at [email protected].
We will then liaise with you to agree the following:
- Which subject areas or year groups would your school be interested in hosting Explore Teaching volunteers
- How many volunteers your school can accommodate during each term/year
- Specific dates that would be suitable for placements
