We partner with many companies to provide financial support that changes the lives of our diverse student community while helping those organisations to reach their own CSR targets.

Below are some incredible stories from our grateful students that have been supported through our partnerships and programmes.

Netcompany selects Westminster student as new postgraduate scholar for 2023–24 academic year

Netcompany is an IT service company that delivers business-critical strategic IT projects which accelerate customers’ digital transformation through digital platforms, core systems and infrastructure services. Netcompany supports one female scholar every year to elevate women in software engineering. The scholarship offers £10,000 for the 2023–24 academic year to a Software Engineering (Conversion) MSc student, with the funding covering a cost-of-living scholarship grant of £5,000 and a part fee-waiver of another £5,000.

This year’s recipient, Marta Unterschute, currently holds a BA in Psychology and an MSc in Sociology, but has been exploring other career paths. She said about the scholarship: "I am honoured to be selected as the Netcompany Postgraduate Scholar. This opportunity will be a catalyst for my academic and professional growth. With the financial support of Netcompany, I can now reduce my working hours that will allow me to delve deeper into my studies to fulfil my full potential as a software engineer. This benefit will also grant me the time to collaborate with my fellow students and participate in mentorship and employability events, thus elevating my professional future."

University of Westminster awards scholarships to Landsec Scholars

Landsec is one of the largest publicly-listed real estate companies in Europe, with a portfolio of retail, leisure, workspace and residential hubs. In 2023, Landsec established Landsec Futures, a £20m fund that aims to deliver around £200m of social value by 2030, supporting at least 30,000 people from underrepresented socio-economic backgrounds towards long-term employment. The scholars are the first in their families to go to university and come from a widening participation background. Along with the funding, each scholar will be matched with an employee from Landsec who will mentor them during their year(s) of study.

The two Landsec Scholars at Westminster are Monica Dantata, an undergraduate Scholar studying Real Estate BSc Honours, who has received a £30,000 grant, £10,000 per annum for three years, and Grace Boateng, a postgraduate Scholar studying Real Estate Development MSc, who has been awarded a £10,000 scholarship.

About the scholarship, Monica said: "This scholarship is extremely valuable to me and will open up many opportunities that I may not have been able to access for different reasons. I am looking forward to meeting with my mentor, which is another great benefit of having this scholarship. Landsec’s support has taken a lot of burdens off of me. In the future, I’d like to complete a Master’s degree, become an expert in this field, and eventually go on to start my own business. I’d like to say that I am extremely enthusiastic and excited to start my new chapter as an undergraduate student and scholar at Westminster.”

Speaking about her scholarship, Grace said: “I am exceedingly grateful and honoured to have been chosen as a recipient of the Landsec PG Scholarship. I would like to express my gratitude for the generous funding of this award. It is a huge financial assistance to me, particularly during these difficult times. The scholarship will help me to focus on my Master’s as my main priority, as the financial burden for my studies has been eased that much more.”

Aziz Foundation Scholar takes up studies at University of Westminster

Aziz Foundation scholarships are open to exceptional students from a British Muslim background looking to progress onto postgraduate study, and at Westminster they are open to British Muslims with career aspirations in media and journalism, policy and law. The partnership between Westminster and the Aziz Foundation began in 2021 and was founded on a number of shared values from promoting Widening Participation at the postgraduate level to removing barriers to access and success for BME students.

Having completed her undergraduate course in Law at the University of York and as a result of her Aziz Foundation Scholarship, Tanzilla Azad is now able to study for her Legal Practice LLM at Westminster in order to qualify as a solicitor.

Speaking about how the scholarship will aid her in her postgraduate studies, she said: “After speaking to former LPC students about how they balanced a work-uni life, they explained that it was impossible due to the course’s intensity. It was daunting to think that either my finances or quality of academic work would suffer.

“After applying for the Aziz Foundation Scholarship, I’m able to pour all my efforts into focusing on my degree. I was delighted to hear that I not only received a scholarship, but that the Foundation’s purpose was to help people like me access Higher Education and increase representation in professional jobs.”

University of Westminster alumnus funds PhD studentship on water bio-desalination

University of Westminster alumnus and long-term benefactor Trevor Yang has funded a PhD studentship in the School of Life Sciences in relation to water bio-desalination. Bio-desalination has the potential to optimise water desalination. It relies on devices called microbial desalination cells (MDCs). MDCs use a combination of microbial metabolism and electrochemical techniques to remove salts from water. The goal of the funded PhD project is to optimise the performance of the MDCs so that they are effective, efficient and scalable.

The scholarship recipient, Clement Nyadroh said: “I am sincerely grateful to Trevor for his support, which is a powerful motivation for me to excel in my research and contribute meaningfully to the scientific community. His investment in my education will not only shape my academic journey but will also have a lasting effect on countless individuals who stand to benefit from the advancements in water desalination.”
