Initial work was done by Dr. Petros Karatsareas on a potential impact case study in relation to his research on London’s Greek Cypriot diaspora and its languages. This was not included in the REF.

Summary

Dr Petros Karatsareas’ work has contributed to public awareness and understanding of the value of non-standard varieties of language, their importance for transnational, multilingual individuals and communities, and the specific contribution of the Greek Cypriot diaspora to London’s multiculturalism and multilingualism. Key beneficiaries include teachers, education experts and policy makers, who have been assisted to improve the quality of language education that the UK’s ethnolinguistic communities offer to their younger members through complementary schools; London’s Greek Cypriot community and community organisations; and a general public interested in London’s multicultural and multilingual history and heritage.

The above case study received support from University of Westminster’s internal grant for the development of impact case study for REF2021. Projects: From Camden to Enfield: A Cypriot migration story (with Athena Mandis, Queen Mary University of London) and The Grenglish Project (with Anna Charalambidou, Middlesex University).
