About us

The Cancer Mechanisms and Biomarkers Research Group (formally known as the Cancer Research Group), is based in the Centre for Optimal Health, within the University of Westminster's School of Life Sciences. We focus on detection, prevention, molecular mechanisms, and investigation of new biomarkers for cancer. Studies are undertaken at the genetic and epigenetic, transcriptomic and proteomic levels. Molecular modeling of protein ligand interactions are performed in collaboration with the Centre for Parallel Computing. Novel platforms for studying tumour characteristics and responsiveness to treatment are available in the group.  

Further themes include cell signaling/receptor-type protein tyrosine phosphatases, glycosylation, apoptosis, EMT, mapping immune responses and behaviours, chromosomal instability for prognosis and prediction, novel diagnostic, immunotherapeutic and stratification approaches in relation to patient outcomes.

The Cancer Mechanisms and Biomarkers Research Group investigates cancer biology and cancer pathology-related mechanisms. The group has a pipeline of expertise that serves as a platform for research and KE and that facilitates the emergence of real-life impact.

Rationale

The group comprises researchers expert in a range of cancer mechanisms, for example in the fields of cell signaling and molecular pathways. The group will build on high quality, robust and cutting edge research on cancer biology, cancer mechanics/mechanisms, cancer prevention and metastasis. The group is closely aligned with the University Health, Innovation and Wellbeing Research Community and is committed to increasing the involvement of participants in the research from design stage to conclusion. The group is working to increase the taught student-research and KE experience as well as to increase the number of researchers from traditionally under-represented groups. The group will create a platform for research and KE cooperation and networking to further the School, CLAS and University Research & KE Strategy.
