English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you'll need to provide official proof of your English language ability.

Undergraduate exchange students

As an exchange student, you'll need to check that you meet the English language requirements below.

You must also check the UKVI requirements page relating to the Student visa and English language requirements, and ensure you have the correct type of test.

If you're considering full degree study (eg studying for a BA or BSc), you'll need to check our main English language requirements page.

For one semester of study:

  • For School of Arts and the School of Media and Communication, a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required, with a minimum of 6.0 in each element.
  • For all other schools, an overall score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is required.

For one academic year of study:

  • For the School of Arts and the School of Media and Communication, a minimum score of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required, with a minimum of 6.0 in each element.
  • For all other schools, an overall score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is required, with a minimum of 5.5 in each element.

Postgraduate exchange students

Although most courses have the following minimum standard English language requirements, some may have higher requirements. For example, some may require a minimum score of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent, with a minimum of 6.5 in each element.

The standard English language requirements are as follows.
