Our Accounting and Finance BSc is designed to equip you with the essential knowledge, skills and practical experience needed to thrive in today’s fast-paced global financial environment. Course structure

You’ll learn through a variety of methods including seminars, workshops and problem-solving exercises. Core modules cover key topics such as accounting, law, audit and taxation, delivered by experienced module leaders. You'll also apply accounting techniques and engage in discussions to deepen your understanding.
Employability is embedded in the curriculum, with workshops and guest speakers from industry. Blended learning, combining face-to-face teaching with online resources, offers flexibility and enhances your independent learning experience.

The following subjects are indicative of what you’ll study on this course.

In Year 1, you’ll build a solid foundation in accounting by practicing essential techniques through a variety of exercises and case studies. You'll also gain practical experience using specialist software like SAGE Accounting, widely used in industry.

Subjects of study include:

  • Computerised Methods in Accounting
  • Fundamentals of Management Accounting
  • Global Business for Accounting and Finance
  • Introductory Financial Accounting
  • Quantitative Methods for Accountants

You’ll also have the chance to tailor your course by choosing an elective module from other parts of the University, including a foreign language.

Credit Level 4

In Year 2, you'll deepen your understanding of accounting concepts and finance theory while exploring the critical role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethics in business. You'll also enhance your professional skills through group presentations and case studies.

Subjects of study include:

  • Auditing Theory and Practice
  • Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility in Accounting
  • Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • Intermediate Management Accounting

You’ll also choose between a range of optional modules such as Corporate Governance and Law and the Business.
You will also have the opportunity to study an elective module from other parts of the University, including a foreign language.

Credit Level 5

Between Years 2 and 3 (Levels 5 and 6), you may choose to undertake either a professional placement year in the UK or an international experience year.

Professional Experience 

You’ll have the option to take a placement year in industry. During the year, you will demonstrate acquisition of a range of professional and commercial skills required within the contemporary business environment through the completion of an extended period of professional practice in the work placement year.

International Experience

Alternatively, you may choose to undertake an international experience year at one of our partner overseas institutions. You’ll study and reside in the country of a host institution during the year. The content of your study is agreed through a Learning Agreement between you, the home institution and Westminster Business School.

In Year 3, you'll adopt a proactive, self-directed approach to your learning, engaging in extensive reading on specialist subjects. This prepares you for maintaining professional competencies and supports your ongoing professional development. The year is also designed to strengthen your academic skills for those considering postgraduate study.

  • Advanced Aspects of Management Accounting
  • Advanced Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • Financial Management
  • Strategic Perspectives for Finance and Accounting

You’ll also choose between a range of optional modules such as Company Law, Contemporary Issues in Accounting, Dissertation and Taxation. You will also have the opportunity to study an elective module from other parts of the University, including a foreign language.

Credit Level 6

Professional accreditation

Our school fosters strong ties with prominent professional accountancy bodies. Upon completion of the course, students have the opportunity to gain up to nine exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) exams, up to six exemptions from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) exams, and up to eight exemptions from Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) exams, subject to application to the relevant professional bodies.

EU Qualifications Welcome Award Scheme

How you'll be taught

Teaching methods across all our undergraduate courses focus on active student learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, problem-based and blended learning, and where appropriate practical application. Learning typically falls into three broad categories:

  • Scheduled hours: examples include lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, supervised time in a studio
  • Placement: placement hours normally include placement opportunities, but may also include live projects or virtual activity involving employers
  • Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision
