University of Westminster Press was established in 2015 and is a mission-driven, non-profit Open Access publisher of peer reviewed books, journals and policy briefs, with particular strengths in media and communications and popular culture, as well as across a range of fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
UWP is part of a new wave of University Presses that have emerged in the last decade, committed to challenging traditional approaches to academic publishing and to promoting the Open Research agenda within the University of Westminster and beyond.
UWP publishes in subject areas where University of Westminster is particularly well-known, and has established itself as a respected, prestigious publishing house that promotes the University’s research strengths, enhances the research environment and facilitates the wide dissemination of impactful scholarship. We utilise a ‘diamond’ Open Access model, meaning there are no charges for authors who publish with us, or readers wishing to access our publications.
- UWP publishes six journals: Active Travel Studies, in association with the Active Travel Academy; Anthropocenes: Human, Inhuman, Posthuman, edited by David Chandler and Andreas Philipopoulos-Mihalopoulos; Entertainment and Sports Law Journal; Journal of Deliberative Democracy; Silk Road: A Journal or Eurasian Development, in association with the Westminster International University at Tashkent; and Westminster Papers in Communication and Culture in association with CAMRI
- Our book series include Critical, Digital and Social Media Studies, edited by Christian Fuchs, and Law and the Senses
- Offers a route and support for Westminster policy papers
- Offers a route for publication of research-based monographs or edited collections for Westminster and external authors and editors
- Our CAMRI Policy Briefs and Reports series publishes rigorous and evidence-based policy advice and analysis on subjects such as misinformation policy, AI and the internet of things, online advertising tax and ethical consumption and the fashion media
- We publish in a range of formats including textbooks, monographs, edited collections, policy briefs and shortform titles (books of between 30-50,000 words)
- All our books are freely available in a range of digital formats, with print editions made available for purchase at low prices
- Our books and articles are hosted on sites such as JSTOR, OAPEN, The Directory of Open Access Journals, Google Books and Science Open
- Authors retain copyright in their work and all our publications are published under CC BY Creative Commons licences
- In April 2021 we reached our millionth download, with our books and journals accessed across 197 countries
- Our Academic Editorial Board comprises of senior scholars from across the University and is Chaired by Professor Pippa Catterall
- We are signatories to the EvenUp initiative, which brings UK and Irish University Presses together to address issues of equity, diversity and inclusivity in the academic publishing industry
- As an Open Access Press, we further the University aims to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular under SDG 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which includes targets and indicators to ensure public access to information
- We are members of the Association of European University Presses and the Association of Learned Professional and Society Publishers
Publishing your research Open Access has many benefits: it can lead to more exposure for your work through higher citation rates, increased global reach, including to those in low and middle income countries, greater public engagement, including by policymakers and practitioners, and the ability to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations, beyond academic silos.
