The Contemporary China Centre focuses on interdisciplinary research on China — broadly defined—which is grounded in cultural studies. Our work builds on Westminster’s long-term commitment to Chinese studies at whose heart lies an engagement with Chinese language, cultural practice and production, and its critical analysis. Our work is built on and informed by the University’s unique collection of propaganda posters from the People’s Republic. For details on some of our recent work please see our projects pages.
We welcome research collaborations and PhD students in the following fields:
- literary and cultural studies, spanning drama, theatre, dance, film, and translation;
- urban studies including regeneration, development, public spaces, and soundscapes;
- gender, religion, ethnicity, and heritage;
- China’s global presence including migration, diaspora, trade and investment, and BRI.
