There is an urgent need to improve healthcare services and reduce social disparities in health nationally and globally. As digital technologies continue to transform the healthcare sector, our Digital Health and Cyberpsychology MSc will prepare students for careers in this rapidly evolving field.
Taught entirely online, this course offers a unique opportunity to explore digital health alongside cyberpsychology, combining cutting-edge knowledge and practical experience. Topics include the equitable and fair applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine, digital technologies used to prevent illness and improve health in underserved and disadvantaged communities, and research methods for the evaluation of eHealth and mHealth solutions for people from minoritised or marginalised social groups.
You’ll gain a deep understanding of the ethical and social implications of digital health, in line with national standards and frameworks, and explore the psychological aspects of technology use to improve patient outcomes and support healthy behaviours. You'll discover how to integrate psychological and behavioural sciences into technology design and cultivate expertise as independent researchers and evaluators of digital health interventions.
This course will equip you with the skills needed to design and implement evidence-based medical interventions and services using cutting-edge digital health technologies, such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality, to enhance the health outcomes of people from underserved communities.

Course structure
This course is delivered entirely online, through digital classroom software such as Microsoft Teams, allowing you to fit your studies around your commitments and learn from anywhere in the world. Learning activities are designed to include both virtual synchronous and asynchronous teaching.
You should expect an average of two hours of live teaching sessions per week for each module, delivered online using video conferencing tools. Each module will also involve around one hour per week of asynchronous teaching, consisting of pre-recorded lectures, readings, online discussion forums and other activities that you can complete more flexibly to fit around your own schedule.
There are no geographical restrictions, however the weekly live lectures and seminars, will be delivered around noon (UK time zone).

Core modules
The module aims to familiarise you with current and historical research and theory in cyberpsychology and online behaviour that is relevant to the field of digital health, and to enable you to critically examine digital health interventions from these perspectives. It will also instil a nuanced understanding of the ethical considerations and social repercussions of online behaviours, with a special emphasis on public health implications, and provide you with robust theoretical perspectives for understanding the psychology of online behaviours.
The module offers a historical overview of foundational theories and covers research design, methodologies, and ethical considerations. Case studies in digital health and cyberpsychology research will be reviewed. You will also explore practical research tools and platforms in digital health research through hands-on exercises.
The module explores cross-category methods that combine both quantitative and qualitative approaches for a comprehensive evaluation, with a focus on acceptability and uptake in marginalised and minority communities. Each week, new digital health interventions will be introduced for round table discussions on various methods for their evaluation, auditing, and monitoring. The module concludes with your presentations where evaluation plans are presented and critiqued. Finally, the module wraps up with a discussion of the broader implications and applications of digital technology in reducing health disparities.
You can select a relevant area to explore and integrate your own work experience or interests in digital health and cyberpsychology with the course's taught material. Guidance on selecting subject areas will be provided at the beginning of the academic year and through interaction with your project supervisor. You will be advised to follow specific steps to progress with your extended research-based projects, including developing research proposals, conducting literature reviews, submitting ethics applications, recruiting participants, collecting data, analysing data, and writing the final report.
You will select two areas to study in-depth in digital health and cyberpsychology and explore them for half a semester. You will learn about conducting systematic reviews, writing grant applications and business cases, and gain valuable skills in grant committee discussions.
The module covers contemporary topics in digital health with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. You will explore technologies to reduce health inequalities, such as health chatbots, eHealth, mHealth, AI, and medical robots. Each week will delve into specific topics, and you will present on their applicability in promoting equitable healthcare solutions. The module concludes with an understanding of how technology influences healthcare in creating inclusive and equitable services.
You will participate in a placement-based learning program as part of your coursework. The module requires you to volunteer for three hours a week in an organisation related to digital health, with a focus on assisting people from underserved communities. You can either choose your own digital health settings or collaborate with the employability team to find relevant placements. As part of the module assessment, you will need to reflect on your activities, skills, and ethical considerations.

Dr Tom Nadarzynski
Senior Lecturer
Dr. Tom Nadarzynski is a lecturer and researcher who focuses on improving healthcare using digital tools, especially for groups that often face barriers in accessing healthcare, such as ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ communities.
Throughout his career, Dr. Nadarzynski has worked on projects related to sexual health, including helping to improve vaccination programmes and using AI and chatbots to help reduce sexually transmitted infections.
One of the key topics in Dr. Nadarzynski’s research is "AI hesitancy," which is when people are reluctant to use AI tools in healthcare, despite their proven effectiveness. His work in this area has been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Nadarzynski is deeply involved in teaching, leading courses that prepare students to become researchers, giving them the skills to run research projects and apply for funding. He is the director of the new Digital Health and Cyberpsychology MSc, which trains future healthcare workers to use technology ethically to reduce social disparities in health.
It’s important that we create digital health tools that are fair and help everyone, no matter their background, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexuality. To move healthcare into the future, we must work closely with people from all walks of life to design these tools together.

Teaching and Assessment
How you’ll be taught
Our teaching methods focus on teaching co-production and active student learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, problem-based and blended learning, and where appropriate practical application. This course contains a combination of weekly live online teaching sessions and some on-demand activities. Learning typically falls into two broad categories:
- Scheduled hours: online lectures, virtual seminars and group debates.
- Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, engaging with pre-recorded video content, readings, or online discussion forums, dissertation/final project research, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision. Independent study may also include journaling and reflections. Some lectures may be co-produced with students, thus they also involve collaborating with other students and teaching staff outside scheduled teaching hours.
How you’ll be assessed
Our course includes a variety of authentic assessments, which typically fall into four broad categories:
- Oral presentations: group presentations and individual pitches
- Practical: examples include podcasts, blogs, multimedia presentations and technology-based projects, like designing chatbots and devising digital health intervention plans
- Coursework: examples include literature reviews, essays, and research proposals
- Reflective: placement logbook and personal reflection diary
