Dr Serena Masino for Times Higher Education on new book exploring the political economy of disease

Dr Serena Masino, Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in International Development and Economics, wrote a review for Times Higher Education about Rupa Marya and Raj Patel’s new book titled ‘Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice'.

As Dr Masino highlights in her review, the book discusses how inflammation, although usually viewed through a medical and biological lens, finds its root causes in our social and political environments.

Its co-authors are Rupa Marya, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, and Raj Patel, Research Professor in the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas.

In her conclusion of the review, Dr Masino wrote: “Nevertheless, this is a very interesting book that demonstrates how medicine cannot overlook the political dimensions of disease.”

She continued: “It calls for a deeper and more meaningful approach to healing, one that is aware of the profound influences of injustice and trauma on our bodily systems and anatomical processes.”
