Dr Andrew Smith, Reader in Tourism and Events, was quoted in an article by The Guardian about how urban parks have saved our summer.
In the article, Dr Andrew Smith spoke about the use of green spaces as festival and event spaces. He said: “There is a danger that parks become cash cows. Used as assets rather than amenities and services, they become commodities exploited for financial value.”
He added that the cancellation of these events due to the virus is another factor in our increased relationship with parks and said: “We are engaging with a much more pared-down version of parks and have been surprised by how enjoyable it is.”
