Dr Aidan Hehir, Reader in International Relations, was quoted in an article by Bloomberg about the EU’s approach to enlargement to the Western Balkans.
In the article, Bloomberg discussed how the EU’s main goal in its negotiations with Belgrade has been to get Serbia to recognise Kosovo as an independent state, its former province that declared independence after NATO intervention ended fighting on its soil.
Dr Aidan Hehir is an expert in statebuilding in Kosovo, as well as transitional justice and humanitarian intervention. He has published a number of books on the topic, including ‘Kosovo, Intervention and Statebuilding’ and ‘Humanitarian Intervention after Kosovo’.
Speaking to Bloomberg, Dr Hehir said that the EU’s approach has proved short-sighted. He said: “The impression is that Serbia can destabilize the Balkans…But if you ignore other countries and just focus on Serbia, you are making a big mistake, because all these countries can generate instabilities.”
