Adrian York, Senior Lecturer on the Music: Production, Performance and Enterprise BA BMUS course, was interviewed by BBC Radio London about the enduring appeal of Christmas songs.
In the interview, Adrian provided his views as to what Christmas songs each have in common and what makes a Christmas hit.
Talking about the key ingredients that make up a Christmas song, Adrian explained: “I think a lot of them have very ‘major-sounding melodies’, so they’re not miserable songs.”
He continued: “They each have simple melodic structures which are very appealing, very easy to sing, very ‘sing-along’, and people love the Christmas Number One battle, but they want easy nuggets of melody that they can remember and sing along with.”
