This is why marketing and advertising consistently rank among the fastest-growing industries worldwide. Marketing is inherently data-driven. The industry relies on market research, consumer insights, databases, information systems, digital communications, advanced geo-demographic segmentation, and a deep understanding of buyer psychology.

In this dynamic degree program, you will explore every aspect of marketing to prepare you for professional roles across the industry. The curriculum is regularly reviewed to stay current with the rapid changes in this field.

Additionally, you will have the chance to apply your learning to real-world marketing practices through:

  • Switch 23: Our state-of-the-art digital marketing lab is designed to replicate a creative agency, providing you with hands-on experience.
  • Field trips and project-based work: Previous students have studied tourism marketing in Paris and developed marketing campaigns to promote the Tower of London.
  • Real-life case studies: You will work on tasks based on actual projects, such as creating a marketing plan to launch a small independent hotel.

Past graduates have found successful employment as management, marketing and advertising trainees, brand managers, market research assistants and in public relations.

Course structure

This degree offers excellent flexibility and combines a general understanding of businesses with specialist marketing management knowledge. You’ll cover the core concepts, practices and techniques of management and marketing, such as decision-making, marketing strategy, consumer behaviour, marketing research, market analysis, brand building and communications, and gain an understanding of the broader economic context of business.

An introduction to the functions of business organisations, the broader business environment, key management skills and competencies, including:

You will also have the opportunity to take an option module that broadens your skills or helps you gain more in-depth knowledge of your specialist area. Your option module may be a foreign language.

You will also have the opportunity to study a module from other parts of the University, including a foreign language.

Alternatively, in place of the option modules listed above, you may be able to take the WBS Study Abroad Experience (subject to eligibility) or the WBS Work Experience.

Credit Level 5

Optional work placement/study abroad year

Between Years 2 and 3, you can take an optional work placement or study abroad year. The work placement year is a one-year full-time business work placement.

Past students have completed placements in a variety of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and prestigious organisations, including Barclays Bank, British Airways, Disney UK, IBM and the National Health Service (NHS).

The study abroad year allows you to follow a programme of study at one of our partner institutions, giving you an opportunity to experience life in another country and learn Business from a different cultural viewpoint.

You can also choose to split your year abroad into a first semester exchange and a second semester work placement, both conducted overseas.

Professional accreditation

The Business Management (Marketing) BA Honours is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) with a Graduate Gateway programme status. After graduating, you’ll be exempt from the Level 4 “Applied Marketing and Planning Campaign” module towards the CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing / Professional Digital Marketing qualification, and from the Level 6 “Marketing & Digital Strategy” module towards the CIM Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing qualification.

If you are an international student accepted on an undergraduate programme starting in September 2024 or September 2025 at level 3 (Foundation) or level 4 (first year) on the basis of an eligible EU qualification only, you will be awarded a tuition fee reduction which will align your fee more closely to the one for UK students. Student work

Students enrolled in the Destinations Cultural and Heritage Marketing module have had the opportunity to spend a week in Paris to learn about tourism marketing while visiting some of the city's most popular attractions, including the Musée du Louvre, Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, Catacombs, Galerie Lumières, and Sacré-Cœur.

Staff at these institutions provided tourism marketing workshops, and students also had the chance to hear from a former student who is now a marketing communications manager for Southern Europe at Evaneos, where she collaborates with over 2,000 travel agents worldwide.

In previous years, first-year marketing students have visited the Tower of London, exploring over a thousand years of history at this iconic attraction. The primary goal of the trip was to connect new students from various marketing programs at the University, including Marketing Management BA, Marketing Communications BA, International Marketing BA, and Business Management (Marketing) BA.

During the visit, students participated in a series of marketing challenges relevant to their fields of study. These challenges involved developing marketing plans and promotional campaigns aimed at raising global awareness of the Tower of London and attracting more visitors. In addition to making new friends and enhancing their teamwork skills, students gained a glimpse into the roles of marketing managers and advertising professionals.

How you'll be taught

Teaching methods across all our undergraduate courses focus on active student learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, problem-based and blended learning, and where appropriate practical application. Learning typically falls into three broad categories:

  • Scheduled hours: examples include lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, supervised time in a studio
  • Placement: placement hours normally include placement opportunities, but may also include live projects or virtual activity involving employers
  • Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision
