At the University of Westminster, we are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that prioritises the mental health and wellbeing of our students and colleagues. As part of our dedication to equality, diversity, and inclusion, we are proud to participate in the University Mental Health Charter (UMHC) programme.

What is the University Mental Health Charter?
The University Mental Health Charter, developed by the charity Student Minds, is a national framework designed to promote mental health and wellbeing across higher education. It sets out principles of good practice to support positive mental health outcomes for both students and staff.
At Westminster, we are proud to align with the charter’s values, reinforcing our commitment to a healthy, supportive, and thriving university community.
A whole-university approach to mental health
A whole-university approach ensures that mental health and wellbeing are embedded in every aspect of university life. By adopting the charter’s principles, we aim to:
- Create a supportive learning environment – Ensuring all students feel valued, respected, and empowered.
- Enhance access to mental health support – Providing timely, effective, and tailored services.
- Tackle stigma – Encouraging open conversations to foster understanding and inclusivity.
- Promote wellbeing and balance – Supporting students in achieving a healthy study-life equilibrium.
Our commitment and next steps
Achieving the University Mental Health Charter Award is a significant and meaningful journey. To drive this forward, our Vice-Chancellor has established a Steering Group convening in April 2025, comprised of colleagues and students from across the University. This group will ensure continued enthusiasm and commitment to implementing the Charter’s principles.
