Background
Although the Medical Sciences BSc Honours is stand-alone three-year bachelor’s degree, it also offers graduates a transfer directly into the third year of the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MD) degree at our overseas partner, the University of Malta, subject to meeting the entry requirements laid out below.
The University of Malta is a highly regarded and historic university and has a long history of medical education with their MD programme being recognised in the UK for over 100 years. All teaching at the University of Malta is in English and the university has a diverse, international student body with students from over 90 different countries. Students will study in their main campus in Msida, close to Valetta, Malta’s capital city. As a well-known tourist destination, the island is well served in terms of facilities for international visitors and is a superb environment in which to spend three years of study.
The MD Programme offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and awarded by the University of Malta is one of the first three Medical Degrees which have just been accredited by the Association of Medical Schools in Europe and ASIIN, a German accreditation institution. As a result of the accreditation of the MD Degree by AMSE and ASIIN, University of Malta medical graduates have more opportunities for mobility and lifelong learning at an international level.
Compulsory courses
Students who plan to progress to the MD degree must, during their studies at Westminster, undertake the Human Anatomy Summer School based at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery University of Malta Medical School, and a Medical Maltese language programme, both of which are compulsory for students planning to transfer to the MD degree. The Human Anatomy Summer School will focus on whole body anatomy and include cadaveric dissection and will run for six weeks in the summer between your second and third years.
The Medical Maltese language programme will be delivered through a combination of online and videolink teaching followed by an opportunity to extend and practice your knowledge of the Maltese language during the anatomy summer school in Malta. The online/videolink element of the Medical Maltese course will be undertaken alongside your other level 5 studies at the University of Westminster. At the end of the Summer School you will be required to take an examination in Medical Maltese which you must pass in order to be eligible to progress onto the University of Malta MD programme at the end of your third year at the University of Westminster.
The cost of these additional courses is currently £5,000 (payable to the University of Malta), but may rise due to inflation and exchange rate fluctuation (information accurate at the time of publishing, January 2020). We would also suggest budgeting approximately £2,000 to cover living expenses, accommodation, flights, etc for that period.
Entry requirements
As well as the completion of the compulsory courses (the Human Anatomy Summer School and the Medical Maltese language programme), transfer to the MD programme at the University of Malta is conditional upon the successful completion of the Medical Sciences BSc Honours at the University of Westminster with a minimum classification of lower second class honours (2:2).
