Sustainable biotechnology is an area of science with immense growth due to the emerging need for bio-products produced using renewable resources which are therefore sustainable, leading to a strong circular, bioeconomy. Example bio-products include biofuels, biopolymers, biosurfactants, biofertilizers, biopesticides, platform chemicals, biopharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food – including that produced via precision fermentation - and enzymatic detergents.
The Sustainable Biotechnology Research Group (SBRG) aims towards the exploitation of biological resources for the production and development of a range of bio-products and their use for environmental, medical, and chemical/biochemical applications. We are interested in how biotechnology can be applied to minimise waste and to utilise resources more efficiently. Our strapline is, “Tackling global challenges in water, energy and food security, health, environmental protection and sustainable industrial production using biotechnology”.
