Westminster’s Dance Teams return victorious from the Go Hard or Go Home University Dance Championships 2024

The University’s Contemporary, Bollywood and Street Dance teams travelled to the championships in Nottingham on Saturday 9 March 2024, collectively bringing back three trophies.

The University’s three dance teams entered three of the competition’s categories: Beginner Contemporary, Cultural Dance and Intermediate Street Dance. Both the contemporary team, Onyxia, and the Bollywood team, Malang, achieved first place in their respective categories.

The contemporary dance team also won a second-place award for their choreography, competing against 40 teams across 11 styles in this category.

Westminster’s street dance team came up against 16 other teams, some of whom had come from specialised dance programmes, and were able to gain valuable feedback and inspiration from attending the competition.

The University of Westminster’s dance club was established in 2021. It began with ten students who formed part of a street dance team called Hydra. Over the past three years and with the collaboration of committee members, coaches and dancers, the club has grown to include three competitive teams. More recently, the club has brought the Salsa Society under their wing and are planning further collaborations in the future.

The club engages in the University of Westminster’s Students’ Union Dragon's Active programme, which allows students to try out new sports and activities to see if it is something they want to become part of.

Dita Chittussi, the dance team’s captain who is a Psychology and Counselling BSc Honours student, said: “Joining this dance club has profoundly enriched my University experience, making it both memorable and rewarding. The opportunity to meet an array of incredible individuals, forge lasting friendships, and learn from each of them has been an invaluable part of my journey. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of contributing to the club's development and feel immense pride in witnessing our collective achievements. Observing our progress and receiving positive feedback from others has been a testament to the dedication and talent within our club.”

In April, the club will present their year’s work at a charity dance showcase. Purchase tickets on the UWSU website.
