The University of Westminster held its final What Comes Next? event of the 2023-24 academic year, where recent Biomedical Science BSc Honours alumni shared their post-graduation career experiences with current students.
The event took place online on 20 March and was co-organised by the University Alumni Relations Team and , Senior Lecturer in Molecular Biology and Course Leader for Westminster’s Biomedical Science BSc Honours course. The session was chaired by Dr Tinworth and featured four speakers who studied on the course, including Deborah Ojutalayo, a Senior Research Associate at AviadoBio; Beatryz Santos, a Biomedical Scientist in Paediatric Histopathology at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust; and Mati-Markus Kullamäe and Tahsin Taspia, two Master’s students studying Physician Associate Studies at two London universities.
The alumni provided useful tips on how to thrive in the Biomedical field. They spoke about the importance of actively engaging and networking with others, building skills by taking on various roles during and after university and maintaining close relationships with supervisors and lecturers. The panel also highlighted the significance of staying informed and maintaining resilience to prevent burnout. Following the panel discussion, there was a Q&A session with the students.
Speaking about the event, Suhana Rahman, a current Biomedical Science student said: “Going to the Biomedical Science event was eye-opening! It provided invaluable insights into the diverse career paths available after the course, and what steps to take to progress quickly. I’m very grateful for the alumni that came to speak with us and excited for what’s to come.”
