University of Westminster celebrates first-ever Legacy Afternoon Tea

The University of Westminster welcomed alumni and former colleagues to its inaugural Legacy Afternoon Tea – a special gathering held at the University’s Regent Campus to celebrate those who plan to leave a legacy gift in their Will.

Guests were welcomed by Professor Andrew Linn, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, who highlighted the importance of legacy giving and the profound difference it can make to the lives of students – both today and in the years to come. From scholarships and hardship support to enhanced facilities and learning opportunities, legacy gifts help ensure the University of Westminster remains a place where talent and ambition can prosper.

This intimate event marked a significant milestone for the University, offering the chance to recognise and thank those who plan to leave a legacy gift in their Will. Surrounded by the history and heritage of the institution, guests enjoyed a warm and relaxed afternoon of conversation, connection and community.

Hosted in the Alumni Room, the space provided the perfect setting to reflect on the University’s rich past and the impact its supporters continue to have on its future. Attendees shared fond memories of their time at Westminster, and the University’s predecessor institution the Regent Street Polytechnic, and spoke of the opportunities they have seen unfold for future generations of students through the power of education.

Christopher Storey, who was one of the guests at the Afternoon Tea, shared why he is considering remembering the University in his Will. He said: “The Afternoon Tea brought together a group of alumni united in their good fortune to have studied at the University. It was very good to hear first hand how the current challenges facing the university sector are being met and to know that our individual contributions are enabling a new generation to benefit from Westminster's outstanding values. I am now reassessing my Will in the light of this excellent event.”

Another guest at the event, Peter Gordon, who has already remembered the University in his Will, said: “I really enjoyed attending the Afternoon Tea on Monday and met some really interesting people. It's great to find out what others are doing (and its certainly not slacking!) and it's good to see the University is as vibrant as it has ever been. I'm pleased to be leaving a legacy gift to the University as I know that it will help the journey of many individuals, often of limited financial means achieve their aspirations.”

Jordan Scammell, Head of Fundraising at the University of Westminster, said: “I’ve had the privilege of witnessing first-hand the profound impact legacy gifts can have. One particularly moving example is the gift left by a former colleague, the late Dr Maud Tyler, which funds living expenses scholarships for two final-year students worth £10,000, who have experienced the care system. Maud cared deeply about supporting these students whilst she was alive, and it’s incredibly meaningful to see her wishes come to life in such a tangible way. Legacy giving is a deeply personal act of generosity, and I’m truly grateful to everyone who has chosen to remember the University in this way.”

Amar Kataora, Regular Giving and Legacy Officer at the University of Westminster, added: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to the spirit of the event. Their generosity, vision and commitment are helping to build a lasting legacy of opportunity, whilst ensuring that the values important to them can continue long into the future.

“We look forward to welcoming our community to future events as we continue to celebrate the achievements of our university and the people who have made it a special place.”

By supporting students throughout their studies, the University directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10: Reduced Inequalities.
