Recognising that knowledge exchange between UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and overseas partner institutions is key to identifying solutions to the global challenges that confront us all, on 21 July 2022 the University of Westminster joined Perdana University in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to address the role of medical innovation within global and societal issues and crises.
Medical innovation transforms existing healthcare solutions, processes and models, in order to better serve changing needs and expectations. Successful medical innovations are typically characterised by invention and practical adoption, are quickly and effectively taken up as best practice, and are embedded across the whole healthcare system.
The collaborative workshop, jointly organised by Perdana University and the University of Westminster’s Institute of Healthy Urban Living, sought to address key challenges and new advancements from a multitude of medical and healthcare perspectives. Scholars based in Malaysia and the UK presented on a range of subjects, including regenerative medicine, healthcare analytics, AI and healthcare, unmet needs gaps in medicine, innovations fostered by the pandemic, novel pathways for cancer therapy, family medicine and medical education. The workshop celebrated international knowledge exchange, generated by collaboration between Perdana University and the University of Westminster, and opened up a pathway to future joint explorations.
Professor Brendon Noble, Head of Life Sciences at the University of Westminster, said: “Sharing the insights, perspectives and research from two geographically distant universities serves to demonstrate the common global challenges faced and the innovative nature of the solutions to a range of serious healthcare challenges. We are delighted to work with Perdana University and see an exciting future.”
Dr David Barron, Deputy Director and Reader from the Centre for Psychological Medicine of Perdana University, said: “Since the COVID-19 pandemic, knowledge exchange, and particularly international knowledge exchange, has been extremely disrupted. This collaborative event successfully re-established such exchange through its focus on medical innovation. From a multi-disciplinary perspective, scholars discussed key advances in their fields within their own, culturally distinct settings. Alongside the event, exciting and novel academic explorations were discussed between the two institutions. We at Perdana University are excited by the promising endeavours with Westminster and look forward to future discussions.”
The University of Westminster is committed to further enhancing the role of knowledge exchange in its global engagement practice, in order to build strongly on existing collaborative partnerships and continue to enable learning in an international context. The Institute of Healthy Urban Living at the University of Westminster brings together experts and institutions with the ambition to tackle challenges to health and wellbeing in increasingly complex urban environments around the world and will provide a key driver and vehicle for that ambition.
