Course summary

The Fashion Manufacturing MA addresses current industry challenges and skills shortages by focusing on apparel production, systems, sourcing, and manufacturing processes. This research-driven, industry-informed course is designed to meet the evolving needs of fashion manufacturing, from design and product development to innovative production techniques. 

Developed with our industry partner the UK Fashion and Textile Organisation (UKFT), the course aims to equip you with the knowledge and expertise to challenge traditional fashion manufacturing systems. It emphasises technology and design for manufacturing, helping you become a specialist capable of driving innovation in the industry. You’ll also have the opportunity to critically examine existing practices, addressing social, ethical, cultural, and political issues within the context of fashion. 

The course explores new production models, advanced processes, and offers hands-on industry engagement, ensuring you are prepared for leadership roles. You’ll gain valuable skills in prototype manufacturing and garment production. 

Throughout the course, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art industry machinery, specialist software, and expert teaching staff, providing a dynamic learning environment. This MA integrates global insights and practical expertise, preparing you to thrive in the digital fashion industry. It fosters employability, entrepreneurship, and global fluency, bridging design, business, and production.

Course structure

This course is part of a suite of MA Fashion courses which include Fashion Business Management MA, Fashion Sustainability MA, Fashion Accessories Design MA, and Menswear MA (with Professional Experience MFA).  You’ll shape your learning through a set of shared optional modules that address contemporary challenges, advanced digital approaches, and specialised professional contexts while facilitating collaborative and cross-disciplinary learning opportunities.

Core modules

This module aims for you to gain a deep understanding of sustainable supply chains, key stakeholders, and the issues affecting the fashion industry through rigorous and systematic research. You’ll interpret and apply knowledge of complex product development, sourcing, and supply chain issues in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You’ll also critically analyse the issues related to supply chain development and choose appropriate sourcing options for companies operating within the fashion industry, both locally and globally. Additionally, you’ll learn to create realistic implementation plans for product lifecycle management processes and sustainable supply chain options. The module aims to develop your ability to investigate complex problems, present the background of the problem, consider different perspectives, evaluate alternative solutions, and reflect on the preferred solutions and their implications.

This module investigates global production, sourcing and costings for the fashion industry. The aim is to investigate the technology and production processes of fashion clothing, giving you the opportunity to plot a new future for yourself and the fashion industry through problem-solving and critical thinking. You’ll use innovative development methods to generate alternative and experimental outputs. You’ll challenge the processes of product and textile development and costing to deliver profitable and sustainable fashion. This module will explore the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Decent Work and Economic Growth and Responsible Consumption and Production.

This module prepares you to evaluate a full range of complex garment and textile technology processes in the global fashion industry. You’ll gain an advanced understanding of the role of garment technology, the development of textiles and finished apparel products. This will include contemporary innovations in the fashion and textile industry, skills in textile and apparel technology in relation to the fit, fabric, and workmanship of fashion products. You’ll also gain a strong commercial awareness and critical understanding of each step of product development through investigations into the challenges of translating design concepts into mass production. Embedded knowledge and understanding of technical requirements will enable you to recognise comparable and differing processes across brands and market areas to communicate technical standards accordingly. This module will explore the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Responsible Consumption and Production and Climate Action.

This module will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the processes and tools fashion businesses use to assess and manage various types of risk in fashion manufacturing and product development. The module will cover topics such as quality assurance standards, the purpose and implementation of a Quality Management System, risk-based thinking and analysis, organisational structures in apparel manufacturing and governance, and KPIs and their impact. Additionally, you’ll learn about the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle and strategies for internal and external auditing in a fashion manufacturing context. The module will also explore the tensions between social and environmental responsibilities and the nature and limits of these in the business environment. It will examine how companies express their responsibilities to stakeholders beyond shareholders and examine how these responsibilities may lead to serious consequences. Ultimately, this module aims to cultivate a strong and critical awareness of how fashion companies address social and environmental responsibilities while also recognising the nature and limitations of such responsibilities. This module will explore the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Responsible Production and Consumption, Climate Action.

In this year-long module, you’ll be encouraged to select topics of professional interest and independently direct your own research. The research will be a process of investigation, both academic and practice-based, enabling new ideas, concepts and knowledge related to topics in the fashion industry. This module aims to build your confidence and curiosity, develop critical exploration skills, encourage creative visualisation and foster original analysis. The module objective is to prepare graduates as future leaders in the fashion industry for successful careers that provide intellectual, professional, and personal fulfilment. You’ll be guided and supported through the research and the writing process through a mix of lectures, seminars, workshops and personal supervision.

Optional modules

This module aims to engage you in the realities of fashion entrepreneurship. You’ll apply advanced business concepts, branding theories, competitive analysis, marketing practices and financial principles to create a comprehensive business plan for your fashion business idea. You’ll benefit from the collaborative and interdisciplinary environment of the classroom in creating a viable commercial business concept, demonstrating an understanding of the entrepreneurial process.

This module has been designed to give you a critical understanding of the theories of consumer behaviour, innovation and trend management within fashion and broader business contexts. The module will introduce the evolution and relationship between trends and consumer behaviour and their impact on the fashion industry. It will examine social, cultural and environmental change and how this impacts shifting consumer values. Lectures will explore consumer behaviour theories related to the fashion business and the important role of data and insights in trend management. Seminars will combine theory and practice to investigate consumer insight into the fields of consumer buying behaviour and motivation linked to product development, store and phygital environment, brand building and marketing communication. This module will explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): Sustainable Cities and Communities and Responsible Consumption and Production.

This module will provide you with an insider view of the key roles of a Fashion Buyer and Fashion Merchandiser operating in a complex, global retail environment. The digital transformation of fashion retail has created intense competition, and fashion retailers need to devise the perfect cross-channel experience for their customers that takes advantage of digitalisation to provide targeted, commercial fashion products, applying relevant trends to retail strategy to maximise sales and KPIs and minimise risk. This module will explore the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and Responsible Consumption and Production.

The aim of this module is to introduce you to a broad range of activism and social justice practices and allow you to understand how social, political, and philosophical values contribute to current issues in the fashion industry while broadening your skills and knowledge of activism. You’ll be encouraged to explore theories and debates on shared values, social justice, and sustainability benchmarks. You’ll explore systemic change through the lens of the UN SDGs, and social justice concerns. You’ll systematically analyse, evaluate, organise and communicate an advanced awareness of social justice and activism’s ability to utilise fashion and the fashioned body as a tool for communicating and enacting dissent and change.

This module encourages and enhances employability skills with industry experience. Employability is embedded in the module where you’ll gain professional work experience. You’ll be supported through the job application process and undertake a short placement. You’ll attain commercial awareness, entrepreneurship skills and resilience within the world of work with a global outlook. Learning and achievement will be evidenced through a fashion industry project linked to your placement experience. This module will explore the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Decent Work and Economic Growth and Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Careers

This course will equip you for a business management career in the domestic or international fashion industry. It offers an innovative and relevant fashion manufacturing curriculum that focuses on preparing you for senior roles in fashion production and manufacturing. 

Our Fashion MA graduates have gone on to work in senior positions all over the world in many fashion roles, including for well-known brands such as Barbour, Jimmy Choo, Burberry, McQueen, LVMH and Stella Mc Cartney. 

Many of our Fashion MA graduates have also gone on to study at PhD level and undertake further academic research, while others have set up their own businesses or work in fashion manufacturing overseas.

Teaching and Assessment

How you’ll be taught

Teaching methods across all our postgraduate courses focus on active student learning through lectures, seminars, workshops, problem-based and blended learning, and where appropriate practical application. Learning typically falls into two broad categories:

  • Scheduled hours: examples include lectures, seminars, practical classes, workshops, supervised time in a studio
  • Independent study: non-scheduled time in which students are expected to study independently. This may include preparation for scheduled sessions, dissertation/final project research, follow-up work, wider reading or practice, completion of assessment tasks, or revision

Our postgraduate courses include a variety of assessments, which typically fall into three broad categories:

  • Written exams: end of semester exams
