The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is offering a free optional week-long intensive language course to all students and recently graduated alumni in early July.
About the courses
These intensive language courses (10 hours over 5 meetings) are designed to give you the opportunity to develop your foreign language and culture skills in a short period of time.
We'll be offering introductory language classes in German, French, Arabic and Spanish (subject to student demand).
Our interactive online courses provide real-time lessons with an expert tutor to practise speaking and listening, with the flexibility of an online course.
Course content
We'll cover:
- personal introductions, formal and informal
- greetings
- leisure activities
- stating likes and dislikes
- ordering food and drinks
Teaching
Our lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.
Learning resources and self-study
The course is based on our own materials. Access to all multimedia learning resources is included.
You'll be asked to complete between 1-2 hours of homework for every two contact hours.
Who is this class for?
These intensive courses have been designed for complete beginners and will be your first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate in the language.
They are free to all continuing and graduating students, but places are limited.
Course dates
- French: Monday, 5 July to Friday, 9 July from 9-11am
- Arabic: Monday, 5 July to Friday, 9 July from 10-12pm
- Spanish: Monday, 5 July to Friday, 9 July from 1-3pm
- German: Wednesday, 7 July to Friday 9 July, Wednesday 14 July and Thursday 15 July always from 9-11am
