Fine Art Mixed Media BA – 2023

What I've greatly appreciated about my course is its unrestricted nature. The Fine Art Mixed Media BA encompasses a broad spectrum, including painting, installations, performances, films, and more. You could be making a movie one semester, and organise a band for a performance art show the next, with this course you are not limiting your pursuits.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose to pursue my studies in Art at the University of Westminster due to its holistic cultivation and liberal pedagogy. The university's diverse disciplines, spanning film production, graphic design, painting, fashion, and journalism, provided a rich canvas for creative exploration. Despite my initial portfolio consisting of oil paintings, I was uncertain about my future as a professional painter. However, my Course Leader, assured me during the interview that fine art had the ability to transcend and navigate different mediums and facilitate your journey in exploring many roles such as a director, actor, designer, artist and many more. This assurance, emphasising personal agency, solidified my decision to embark on my academic journey at Westminster.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been a three-year journey filled with joy. Even though the pandemic confined my first year of study to digital screens from my home in China, the Fine Art Mixed Media department's vibrant atmosphere transcended geographical barriers. Returning to London for on-campus teaching enriched my experience further, extending beyond the classroom to the exciting streets of the city. Regular visits to art galleries, excursions, and engaging activities allowed me to tap into London's boundless potential, immersing myself in world-class contemporary art exhibitions and opportunities to intern at prestigious galleries, cultivate synergies and sow the seeds for future collaborations.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The university's facilities are comprehensive; whatever equipment or studio you require can be booked. For instance, when I make experimental films, I can book indoor photography studios, green screen rooms, and book a variety of filming equipment, providing immense convenience for my creativity. When setting up exhibitions, the Harrow Campus has 3D Workshops and the Emerging Media Space, offering you wood processing and technical support, among other things. All you need is an idea, and they will help you realise it.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic support, particularly the one-to-one tutorials and discussions with tutors and visiting artists, has been valuable. Given that each of us works on different types of projects and styles, the weekly one-to-one and group tutorials are extremely beneficial. In addition to our department tutors, students from Royal College of Arts and Royal Academy of Arts also visit our studios to discuss contemporary art with us.

One aspect I adore about Westminster is that the tutors provide professional work advice. For instance, when I was preparing for my solo exhibition, the tutors taught me a lot about exhibition layout techniques. When preparing my experimental films, they guided me on shooting methods, allowing me to acquire knowledge in a multitude of domains during my university years.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course

Outside of my course, I have enjoyed art trips organised by our tutors, exploring museums and galleries in London. Additionally, activities like hiking trips and group exhibitions organised by my classmates contribute to a culture of peace, love, kindness, and unity within the course. The overall experience is truly wonderful.

The best aspect of being a University of Westminster student is the ample opportunities to tap into London's resources, meet friends from around the world, and realise the multitude of possibilities in life.

What’s the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

The most surprising aspect of my Westminster experience has been the unexpected journey of becoming a contemporary artist, experimental film director, and actor.

During my time at Westminster, I successfully held solo exhibitions in Shanghai and Paris. I also participated in the production of several films and my experimental films received Winner awards at multiple film festivals. There were many moments during these adventurous and thrilling projects when I wanted to give up, but thanks to the encouragement and assistance of my mentors, I managed to overcome one obstacle after another and become who I am today.
