Translation and Interpreting MA – 2024

As someone aspiring to become an interpreter, I was careful in selecting a postgraduate course that would meet my academic needs and immerse me in a rich language environment.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

As someone aspiring to become an interpreter, I was careful in selecting a postgraduate course that would meet my academic needs and immerse me in a rich language environment. The University of Westminster, located in the heart of London, stood out as the perfect choice, given its strong reputation and the opportunities it offers for language immersion.

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London has been an incredible experience. Living in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world makes me feel part of a vibrant international community. The access to world-class museums, galleries, theatres, and iconic landmarks - many of which offer free entry or student discounts - has enriched my time here. The cultural exchange and learning opportunities are endless.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

The course is both extensive and detailed, covering everything from theoretical foundations to hands-on exercises in translation and interpreting. It also includes guidance on professional development, which I’ve found incredibly valuable.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic team’s dedication is truly remarkable. They are always available to answer questions and provide support. As a course representative, I attend monthly meetings with the course leader and other reps, where student feedback is not only heard but acted upon quickly. It’s reassuring to see how much our input is valued and implemented.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

Absolutely! We have access to two interpreting classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art simultaneous interpretation booths and a wide range of microphones. These facilities are top-notch and provide an excellent environment for honing our skills throughout the academic year.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service.

The University’s Careers and Employability Service has been incredibly helpful. I attended a LinkedIn masterclass focused on connecting with future employers and had one-on-one counselling sessions to revise my CV. Both experiences were invaluable, and it’s clear that the University of Westminster is committed to supporting graduates as they start their careers.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.

I participated in a "Students as Co-Creators" project, where I had the chance to interview professional translators and interpreters. This experience significantly enhanced my communication and professional skills, providing me with practical insights into the industry.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

My advice would be to find a healthy balance between your studies and personal life. London offers endless opportunities, but it also comes with its fair share of distractions. For those on one-year courses, the academic load can be intense, so while you enjoy the city’s vibrant life, make sure your academics remain a priority.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The biggest benefit has been the massive boost in confidence. The strong reputation of my programme, both in the UK and globally, combined with the University’s extensive alumni network and professional training, has made me feel much more prepared and confident as I step into the job market.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

I was pleasantly surprised by the close connections I formed with my fellow students. Despite only studying or living together for a short time, we developed deep bonds and are always ready to support each other. I’m truly grateful for the friendships I’ve made here.
