Deputy Trust Lead Healthcare Scientist | Great Ormond Street Hospital
Biomedical Sciences MSc
Why did you choose to study a postgraduate course?
I had just finished my BSc and applied for HPC (now HCPC) registration as a biomedical scientist. My contract had finished and due to the 2008 banking crisis, there weren’t many jobs around. I decided if I want to progress in my career, I would need a Master’s degree eventually.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
The first year of my BSc had been at Westminster and I’d found the course well-structured and supportive for students working alongside their studies. Secondly, I chose Westminster partly because of the location. The fact I could walk from my work to the University.
How did you find the academic support during your studies?
My assigned personal tutor left during the first few weeks, but I was adopted by the course leader who was incredibly supportive. In fact, I still find her supportive 11 years after finishing the course.
How would you describe your experience studying with students from across the world?
During my studies, I was close to several others on my course, particularly other biomedical scientists in the NHS. Studying alongside others with a similar work background was incredibly helpful, although I did enjoy meeting students from across the world as well.
How did the postgraduate course help you to get your current position?
My MSc at the University of Westminster helped me by broadening my scientific knowledge and giving me the opportunity to do some research. I was able to use this knowledge and qualification to move up to the next stage of my career. My research project was also published as part of a larger study which meant I was able to get an author credit on a peer-reviewed journal article.
