Contemporary Media Practice BA – 2023

The film and photography studios and the darkroom facilities are brilliant. You are only limited by your own ideas, and your willingness to execute them.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I chose the University of Westminster (Harrow Campus) because of the location and the 'feel' of the place. I made a conscious effort to go and visit all the universities I was interested in. Westminster seemed more relaxed and warm than other centrally based universities. I wanted to be close to the city but not feel like I was in a city. The fresh air and open space in Harrow is a wonderful benefit.

How has your experience been studying in London?

It truly is a melting pot of culture, which is incredibly inspiring as an artist but it also encourages a broader, more open perspective on the world. You become an 'international citizen'.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

My course is experimental and open. This works for me, as I like the independence and freedom. I'm happy with just a brief and a deadline and I can get on with things. This openness is liberating as I don't feel limited by a particular medium. I have done projects using 35mm, 120mm and digital photography, 16mm and digital film, used projectors, microscopes, made darkroom prints and that was just the first year and a half. This course is best if you are self-motivated. It gives back what you put in.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

I appreciate the genuine enthusiasm of lecturers who are clearly passionate about the subject they are teaching. This feeling rubs off on you and you are more curious as well as eager to learn as a result. Enthusiasm is everything.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The film and photography studios and the darkroom facilities are brilliant. You are only limited by your own ideas, and your willingness to execute them.

Have you used the University Careers and Employability Service? If yes tell us about your experience

I have used the service along with help from my personal tutor to find potential internships for my second semester. I also used it to gain information about freelancing in the UK. All the knowledge you require for gaining work experience is available to you.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

Visit the campus! No matter how good the brochure looks, it is so important to get a 'feel' of the place before you go.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

  1. Being in the city
  2. Having structure and a framework to help you develop your personal work
  3. Being part of a diverse global community.
