Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

One reason I chose the University of Westminster was its location. Studying in the heart of London, one of the most historic and exciting cities in the world, is a great advantage. The community at Westminster was another factor, and it did not disappoint throughout my studies. Having four main campuses across London was an exciting prospect compared to the usual single campus at most universities, and each Westminster campus has something to offer.

How has your experience been studying in London?

The University of Westminster's central London location provides a vibrant culture and exciting career opportunities. Studying in London has been a fantastic experience, offering a rich blend of social and academic opportunities.

Tell us about your course and what have you particularly enjoyed?

The Computer Games Development course has been instrumental in enhancing my technical skills, while also developing my teamwork and communication abilities. Engaging in group projects as part of the course has prepared me for the industry, refining my collaborative skills. Additionally, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with different technologies on various projects, allowing me to witness growth in my skills and understanding throughout the course.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The lecturers have been incredibly supportive, readily addressing any questions related to the field of study. Their passion is inspiring and encourages you to produce your best work. The university's global culture has been beneficial, as I've had the privilege of learning from lecturers with diverse career experiences and backgrounds, providing valuable insights into the industry.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

The course offers dedicated spaces for both team and solo projects, equipped with the necessary specialist software and hardware. It has been fantastic to have the flexibility to work on course-related projects between lectures and seminars. One standout facility is the XR lab located at the Cavendish campus, which houses a collection of VR hardware and 3D production equipment for specialist projects. Additionally, the course provides access to the 'Innovation Space,' which has proven incredibly useful for team collaboration. This room features digital boards and a layout which encourages group work, enhancing the overall collaborative experience.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.

At the University of Westminster, there's a wealth of opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities. I've been actively involved in several societies, including the Games Society and Esports Society, which regularly host events, competitions, and giveaways. Additionally, I've participated in open days as a student helper and welcomed new international students as part of FANS (Friends of Arriving New Students), which has been instrumental in improving my communication skills.

My course also encourages students to participate in game jams, where teams collaborate to create games within a limited timeframe. One memorable experience was winning 'best playable game' at the Imperial War Museum's war game jam. Our team developed a 3D experience depicting the perspectives of a soldier and his daughter during and after WW1.

In the summer of 2022, I was part of a team given a budget to develop a game into a publishable product. After months of hard work, we had the opportunity to showcase our game at Barclay’s headquarters in Canary Wharf, London. This invaluable experience allowed us to network with industry professionals, present our game, and receive valuable feedback.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

My advice would be to seize every opportunity during your time at the University. Even if you're unsure where it might lead, remember that your time at Westminster is about learning and growing through experiences. While focusing on your studies is crucial, make sure to carve out time to engage in the various societies and groups offered by the Student Union. These experiences can be just as enriching and valuable as your academic pursuits.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The best aspect of being a University of Westminster student is the community and opportunities that can be found when studying here. As a student, I have a lot of good memories of my experiences at the University, and I will likely remember these long into the future.

What’s the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

The most unexpected aspect of my time at the University was the number of opportunities there are to learn outside of lectures and seminars. The University offers a variety of experiences that can help further your skills for your future career.
