Data Science and Analytics MSc – 2021

While I was still working on my degree, I was able to start searching for future employment opportunities and network with people from the industry… Studying in London was beneficial for my future employability and personal development.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

When I was researching universities in the United Kingdom, I prioritised three factors: location and proximity to other external resources, diversity and inclusion, and academic rigour. The University of Westminster was one of the few postgraduate schools that excelled in all of the three criteria. Located in the heart of London, the university is naturally positioned close to career networking events, potential employers, and other city resources such as libraries. Westminster has a large international community of ambitious and dedicated students and staff.

How has your experience been studying in London?

London was an amazing place to be for my postgraduate studies. While I was still working on my degree, I was able to start searching for future employment opportunities and network with people from industry. At the same time, in between studies, I spent some time on cultural activities and met people from all around the world. Studying in London was beneficial for my future employability and personal development.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

My favourite part of the course was learning and applying new knowledge in practice either through course assignments or my Master’s dissertation. Through the course, the assignments were focused on actual business problems, and I was able to not only strengthen my theoretical knowledge but also to understand the applications of the methods from data analytics and machine learning in the industry. I also enjoyed the group assignments that promoted collaboration and learning from each other.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic support was excellent on my course. The lecturers had regular office hours where I was able to ask any questions about the module material or discuss any related topics. The lectures were complemented by tutorials with small class groups, where there was room for additional academic support. Overall, the academic staff were friendly and wanted every student to succeed in their studies.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service

I joined several events from Careers and Employability Services including the Mentoring Scheme and other career workshops. Through the Mentoring Scheme, I connected to a Westminster alumnus who had a career in data science. My mentor was extremely helpful in providing industry (and role-specific) advice for the career I want to pursue.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

My advice to someone considering studying at Westminster is that once you become a student, be proactive and take advantage of all the resources that you are surrounded with – the academic support, career resources, and the community. Furthermore, go beyond the university's resources, and explore what London has to offer. Make the most of your experience at Westminster!
