Sociology and Criminology BA – 2023
I enjoyed every moment of studying this course due to the exciting content and links to our contemporary world. The best part was the great choice of available modules, which meant that I could tailor my learning to my personal interests and career goals.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
My priority when choosing which university to go to was always that I wanted it to be a very diverse and welcoming place. After attending open days at other universities, I quickly realised that this university had made me feel safe and welcomed like never before. I felt like I belonged and was highly excited about the journey. Although initially, the people and incredible location had drawn me to the university, it was the variety of optional modules for my course and the structure that ultimately solidified my decision.
How has your experience been studying in London?
Studying in London has always been a dream of mine. London is a multicultural city that is full of excitement and the Regent Campus in the centre of London meant that my university experience was never overwhelming or pressurising. I maintained a strong balance between my studies and social life due to the great location and was able to meet such a diverse range of people.
What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?
Growing up, I had always struggled with studying subjects I was just not interested in. This was until I had found Sociology and Criminology. I enjoyed every moment of studying this course due to the exciting content and links to our contemporary world. The best part was the great choice of available modules, which meant that I could tailor my learning to my personal interests and career goals. Throughout the course, I was often given the creative freedom to produce assignments on topics I was interested in, in a format of my choice. For example, I had the exciting opportunity to create my podcast to present research in an accessible way to widespread audiences.
How have you found academic support as part of your studies?
We had great academic support. I always felt that lecturers were highly approachable and went above and beyond for us throughout the course. If I had any concerns, I knew that the office hours were there if I needed any help.
Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service.
My favourite thing about this university is and has always been the incredible support available outside of my studies. Throughout my time at university, I had made it my mission to get involved and take advantage of every opportunity for growth that the university had supplied. I have participated in the Career Mentoring Programme, Ask a Mentor Service and multiple Careers Consultant Meetings. I also took on the Westminster Employability Award (WEA), where I achieved a Gold certification. These experiences undoubtedly gave me confidence and eased any concerns and pressures I felt in approaching my future career. The WEA was pivotal in my university experience as it allowed me to overcome my limiting beliefs about the future.
Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course
While at university, I participated in many activities outside of my course. I worked as a Social Media Representative of the Travel Society, an Events Manager for the Henna Society, and a Social Media Ambassador at the university. These roles enabled me to combine my passions while meeting new people and creating lasting memories. In addition, I was selected to be a part of the Westminster Working Cultures Programmes in the UK in 2022, Mumbai in 2023, and Berlin in 2023. These international trips were invaluable opportunities that allowed me to grow and gain employability skills while making lifelong friends. I recommend that future students apply to this programme!
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
If you're thinking about coming here to study, it's essential to consider what you hope to gain from your university experience and do some research! If you're looking for a university to help you become the best version of yourself and support your personal and professional growth, this is the place for you. It's not only diverse, inclusive, and welcoming, but it's also genuinely committed to supporting its students. As an alum, I still have access to the university's Careers and Employability Service for up to 3 years post-graduation. I'm genuinely thankful for the opportunities the university has provided me with. And for new students, my advice is to be proactive and seize every opportunity that comes your way!
