Architecture and Environmental Design MSc – 2017

The Architecture and Environmental Design MSc is excellent both academically speaking and in terms of the work opportunities that it provides.

The Architecture and Environmental Design MSc is excellent both academically speaking and in terms of the work opportunities that it provides. I took theoretical courses on the history and methodology of sustainable design, as well as more technical courses which introduce you to important software such as Grasshopper, Ladybug, Radiance and DIVA in Rhino, and Autodesk CFD and TAS. A highlight of my year at the University of Westminster was a trip to Brazil with the whole course, where we worked on projects promoting sustainability and energy efficiency, such as a project on iconic farming in the main plazas of Sao Paulo.

For my MSc thesis project, I investigated the impact of new developments of high rise residential buildings concerning Sunlight and Daylight regulations in the UK, and their implications on thermal performance over summer. The programme gave me the opportunity to work on this project in collaboration with WSP, whose experts provided important advice for developing and executing the research, and feedback on my work. In particular, this collaboration allowed the project to respond to real-world needs.

I am now working as a microclimate consultant at WSP, where I apply many of the skills acquired during the course, particularly the technical knowledge of solar, daylight and wind analysis, in my daily work. I highly recommend this programme to any graduate interested in sustainable design, especially to those who seek to pursue a career in this exciting field.
