English Language and International Communication BA – 2025

I really enjoy my course in every aspect.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster

For me, the University of Westminster was a blessing in disguise. I remember being gutted about not being able to get into my first-choice university by just one grade. I struggled to find a university that best suited my needs and offered a course that would intrigue me. That's when I discovered the University of Westminster. The campus is right in the heart of vibrant London, which was a breath of fresh air for me to explore. Fortunately, my elder sibling had done their undergraduate degree here and enjoyed their time, so I knew I would be in a good place. The welcoming and helpful staff set the University of Westminster apart. The phone call with them was so lovely and considerate. I remember thinking, "Yes, this is just the place for me."

How has your experience been studying in London?

Studying in London is such a unique and exhilarating experience. Accessing the different campuses with just a walk around the vibrant cityscapes or a quick tube ride to Harrow campus to cheer on the sports teams is incredible. The lessons are engaging, with lecturers who are always helpful in teaching the material and eager to answer questions if we find it difficult. It truly makes studying here a wonderful experience. I enjoy participating in seminars and workshops, as I always find something new to learn, and the university helps students to go on to achieve what they want in their careers.

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

I really enjoy my course in every aspect. It's a fun program that excels at giving insight in to understanding the world around us, how we communicate with people, and the history of how our language is shaped and continues to evolve. If I had to choose a highlight, it would be the "World Varieties of English" module, where we delved into variations of the English language worldwide, which focused on how languages affect English for non-native speakers and how variants are viewed by others globally. It was an exciting module and such an eye-opener for me.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic support services have been a great help to me. Whenever I need support, either mentally or with my studies, they are always there to provide feedback and give as much assistance as possible.

Are there any stand-out facilities at the University?

The Student Union is a highlight for me. The many societies and sports clubs are helpful and engaging. The Regent Campus gym is useful for staying in shape and keeping healthy. Seeing sports clubs like Kendo from the Old Gym on Tuesdays is cool. The Regent Street cinema next door is so convenient for a good movie when you're in the mood. The best of all are the Gallery Cafe and the Hideaway. Seeing the students' work in the cafe (especially photography - I'm an avid photography fan and take photos as a hobby), while sipping a good cup of coffee or being in the Hideaway after class with friends is relaxing and a great place to be.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service.

I have used the Employability Service, and to tell you the truth,  it is such an easily accessible service to use and one that is a must if you want to excel in your chances of getting an outstanding career. The website allows you to book events that bolster your employability skills. The Employability Award is a perfect path for gaining new knowledge, and you get rewards for completing it, too. I enjoy it, and it has helped me a tonne.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.

When it comes to societies and activities, I like to dabble in a lot of them. I tend to be around the different campuses a lot, so I love being able to explore new things. I love cheering on the sports teams at Harrow, meeting new people at each campus, and hearing about their experiences. My goal for the next few years is to join as many activities as possible at the university and to make the most of my time here.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

When picking a subject to study, do what is best for you. It can be daunting but trust your gut and go for it. I know you will love whatever you think is best for you.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The people. Everyone here is so wonderful, each with their perspectives and experiences to share. You won't feel alone here, and it is a fantastic community. And if you want someone to talk to, I'm always available to say hi and hang out, or I am happy to answer any of your questions!

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

The sheer number of things to do here is surprising and unexpected. If I had a penny for every activity that is accessible across the campuses, I'd be a millionaire! But if you find something you like, you'll want to be there as often as possible.
