Music Management MA – 2017

To be able to connect, learn and network with people working in the field was a big pull for me.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I worked my way up at Apple, and was supporting an amazing programme that helps lift the curtain on how creatives make their art on Apple products - songwriters, producers, artists, etc. I had completed an undergrad in Entertainment Marketing and knew that my passion and strength was music. I wanted to study further and get a more academic framework to my thinking and when I found a Music Business Management MA course at the University of Westminster, it felt like the perfect fit - I could study in the evenings and work at Apple in the day, whilst learning more about the business side of the music industry.

How did this postgraduate course help you to define your career goals?

The postgraduate course helped me develop skills that are not just useful within the work environment but everywhere.

Before I did my course, I knew I wanted to work in the music industry but, I didn’t know where my skills would be of most use. The University of Westminster allowed me to see that jigsaw puzzle and see that missing piece and know that’s where I fit in.

How would you describe the University of Westminster?

The course stood out as it was based in London, a place where you can be anything you want to be. It had lecturers experienced in the industry and boasted a lot of music executives as guest speakers. To be able to connect, learn and network with people working in the field was a big pull for me. I also found the University of Westminster to be a very diverse place.

How would you describe your experience studying at the University of Westminster?

The guest speakers were the highlight of the course - to be able to speak with people like Emma Banks (CAA), Neil West (Apple Music), Olivia Nunn (Island Record), Silvia Gargiulo (BIY People Recruitment), Sarah Stennett (First Access Management) and many others was an invaluable first-person insight.

Secondly, my classmates have become close friends in the industry - people like Jonas Tandler (at Apple Music), Kaitlyn Hall (at Spotify), Simon Wagner (YouTube Music), Sarah Rodriguez (Arlo Parks Management), and Charlie Leslau (Universal Music Publishing), are all thriving in the industry and were graduates around the same time as me. The industry is small and can be scary, so to have alumni you can lean on, ask for advice and support and give support when needed, is so helpful. Whenever we connect at events or our paths cross on an artist campaign, there's a camaraderie and familiarity that is amazing - it's so great to see so many classmates doing what they love.
