Museums, Galleries and Contemporary Culture MA – 2024

I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying this course! Learning about the theories surrounding museums, galleries, and contemporary cultures was fascinating, and I loved being able to put those theories into practice through on-site learning at museums and galleries. Getting behind-the-scenes access to various cultural institutions gave me a deeper understanding of their purpose and role today.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

I was drawn to the course because of its wide range of modules and practical opportunities, like regularly visiting museums and galleries for tours and talks with professionals. The University's central London location also made it convenient to explore nearby museums and galleries before or after lectures.

The modules were informative, well-structured, and engaging. I particularly enjoyed the presentations from guest speakers who shared their professional insights and experiences. For example, during the Exhibiting Photography module, we spent 7-8 weeks at The Photographers' Gallery, collaborating with the public and attending talks by staff members, including the Director.

The course also helped me build confidence in networking with museum and gallery professionals. This was an essential skill for my final project, where I collaborated with Four Corners Gallery to create a research project based on their archive collection. Not only did this form part of my final submission, but it also helped me establish a professional relationship with Four Corners. As a result, my work is being featured in their Autumn 2025 programming!

How have you found the academic/lecturer support as part of your studies?

The lecturers were incredibly supportive and always happy to discuss ideas, questions, or module topics in more depth. They consistently reminded us how and where to reach them and highlighted other support services available, such as personal tutors, careers and employability services, learning support, and library/study resources.

The feedback on assignments was always constructive, encouraging, and helpful. It gave me the tools to improve my research engagement and writing skills, particularly for exhibition and collection proposals.

Did you undertake any projects or internships?

During my Master’s studies, I completed a research internship with University academic, Sara Dominici, at the British Library. I worked with archival publications from the photographic press and other materials to gather data on amateur darkroom practices from the 1880s to 1910s. While the research was mostly self-led, I collaborated with two other talented interns. We shared our collected data through a spreadsheet and regularly communicated and supported one another.

We also had the chance to assist at a conference related to the research. This experience allowed me to develop skills in gathering and organising research data for a professional project, as well as managing my time effectively to complete tasks independently and as part of a team. The internship gave me valuable skills that I can apply to future opportunities, furthering my personal and professional career in the arts and cultural sector.

What would be your advice to someone considering studying at Westminster?

The lecturers are approachable and passionate about their subject areas. If you’re ever unsure about something from a lecture, don’t hesitate to reach out - they’re always happy to provide more guidance.

I also recommend making the most of the University’s social and study spaces, like the Hideaway, the gym, and the MA computer/study area at the Regent Street Campus, as well as the libraries and facilities at the Cavendish and Harrow Campuses.

Most importantly, enjoy your time studying! It can go by quickly, so take advantage of the opportunity to network with your peers and lecturers and get involved in events, talks, or internships that come your way.

If you ever feel overwhelmed by assessments or other challenges, it’s worth reaching out to your personal tutor or lecturers for support. The University also offers professional counselling, mental health, and wellbeing services. Take care of yourself and remember that all your hard work is worth it in the end - it’s a fantastic experience!
