Media, Campaigning and Social Change MA – 2023
The uniqueness of the course itself stands out. There isn't another programme quite like it in the country.
Why did you choose the University of Westminster?
I was attracted to this course because it aligned perfectly with my passions and interests. Before enrolling, the course leader, Anastasia, took the time to discuss the course with me, outlining the learning outcomes in detail. This conversation reassured me that I had made the right choice.
How has your experience been studying in London?
Having lived in London for thirty years, I was able to balance my master's studies with my day job. The central London location was incredibly convenient, and I particularly enjoyed the historic buildings, especially on Regent Street.
What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?
The course offers a blend of academic and practical communication modules. Returning to academia later in life presented a learning curve, especially in mastering academic writing and referencing. Despite balancing studies with my job, I found the core modules for the Media, Campaigning and Social Change MA to be excellent. The lectures and seminars were engaging, with discussions often extending beyond the scheduled sessions. We had a range of guest lecturers and practitioners, and our seminar leaders organised group outings to relevant exhibitions and events. Academically, my communication practice has become more enriched, deeply rooted in its historical context and the insights of major theorists.
How have you found academic support as part of your studies?
The course leaders, Anastasia and Michaela, were incredibly supportive. The course was substantial, with core modules packed with relevant resources and engaging lecture content. The reading lists were extensive and up-to-date, which is essential for studying fast-evolving media phenomena.
Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?
The course itself stands out. There isn't another programme like it in the country.
Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.
I built strong connections with my MA cohort, forming lasting friendships with like-minded individuals. We continue to meet regularly, attending political and author talks, visiting exhibitions and shows, and campaigning together on issues that matter to us.
What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?
Take advantage of living in one of the world's major cultural capitals. Explore the many discounts available at theatres, cinemas, and more. Enjoy the free museums, beautiful parks, and history of the city.
What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?
I loved the central London location, and graduating at the Royal Festival Hall was an exceptional experience.
What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?
I didn't expect to make so many good friends as a part-time, working student, but I've graduated with a wonderful network of supportive fellow course members, which I genuinely appreciate.
