Architecture and Environmental Design MSc – 2023

The best aspect would be the university's dedication to promote engagement through a diverse range of exhibitions, meetups, enjoyable events, and other engaging activities.

Why did you choose the University of Westminster?

When I was applying, the University of Westminster was the only institution offering a one-year master's course in architecture, which was a perfect fit for me. Additionally, its central London location at the Marylebone campus suited my preferences. I was also impressed by the university's effective outreach and advertising campaigns aimed at prospective students.

How has your experience been studying in London?

As an international student, studying in a big city like London was quite challenging. Securing suitable housing, figuring out transportation, and finding a part-time job were daunting tasks on top of the demanding master's course. However, the city is full of opportunities, and every day offered something new and exciting!

What have you particularly enjoyed about your course?

While my course was challenging and packed a significant amount of technical information into one year, the tutors delivered the content brilliantly and in an organised manner. The lab experiments were a fun and practical way of learning. I particularly enjoyed learning about climate considerations in architecture and its environmental impact through specific software.

How have you found academic support as part of your studies?

The academic support was ever-present. From the beginning, the course leader made it clear that seeking help was always appreciated and encouraged. Her commitment to the course was extraordinary. Support was available during lectures and sometimes even after, which was invaluable. Additionally, the recordings of every lecture allowed for revision and reinforcement of concepts. Alongside academic support, there was also space to address personal issues, which was thoughtful.

Are there any stand-out facilities associated with your course?

Absolutely! The computer rooms had all the necessary software installed, which was a significant help as we were working with specific software applications.

Tell us about your experience of using the University Careers and Employability Service.

I utilised the Careers and Employability Service to find part-time work on campus. I was successful in securing a research role related to my field, for a couple of months, which I was delighted with. I also booked in-person appointments for advice on my CV and portfolio, which were helpful. Additionally, I attended their informative on-campus events.

Tell us about any activities that you have undertaken outside of your course.

In my second semester, we went on a trip to Cambridge to visit a cohousing community and a sustainable neighbourhood. We also stopped at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences and the Cambridge central mosque, all built based on environmental design principles. It was an intriguing and enjoyable learning experience.

What would your advice be to someone considering studying at Westminster?

My advice would be to explore the different campuses at the University of Westminster, as the university is spread throughout London, and knowing the locations and what they have to offer is helpful. Additionally, attending an open day is never a bad idea.

What's the best aspect of being a University of Westminster student?

The best aspect would be the university's dedication efforts to promote foster engagement through a diverse range of various exhibitions, meetups, enjoyable events, and other engaging activities. Attending most of these events throughout the year helped me meet new people and, more importantly, gain valuable insights into my career. I also enjoyed working in the shared spaces and the library.

What was the most surprising or unexpected aspect of your Westminster experience?

I was surprised by how quickly the year passed, while enjoying the winter warmer complimentary breakfasts and three-pound meals at lunch. These initiatives were quite useful and thoughtful.
