What is clearing and how does it work?

Clearing is part of the UCAS application process. It helps students who have not yet secured a university place to find and apply for a course.

Prepare for Clearing

Browse our Courses in Clearing to find the right course for you.

When you have your results

Complete our form to apply for the course you've chosen.

If you're still waiting for your results, apply as soon as you have them. Make sure you have your UCAS number and qualification details ready (subjects and grades), including GCSE results. It's also helpful to have a pen and paper to take any notes.

If you meet our entry requirements and we can offer you a place, we'll email you to let you know. You'll receive formal confirmation via email with a deadline for accepting your place.

I have a Clearing offer. What next?

If you call us on results day and we offer you a place, you’ll need to log on to UCAS Hub to accept our offer. You’ll be able to do this from 1pm on Thursday 15 August. Find out more in our FAQs section below.

Social media

Head over to our social media channels to hear advice from Clearing students, pick up some tips on managing Clearing stress, and meet some of the team behind our Clearing phone lines.

Clearing FAQs

Yes, applicants should have all their results, including any GCSE results.

If you call us on results day and we offer you a place, you’ll need to log on to UCAS Hub to enter your Clearing choice so we can confirm your place. You’ll be able to do this from 1pm on Thursday 15 August.

To accept our offer, you'll need to:

  1. Log on to UCAS Hub, click ‘Add Clearing choice’ and fill in the course details before the deadline you were given in your offer email. This confirms that you’re accepting the offer from us
  2. When we’ve verified your results, we’ll confirm your place via email. You’ll also receive confirmation from UCAS and see details of your place on UCAS Hub. This process can take a couple of days, so don’t worry if the confirmed offer doesn’t appear immediately

We may need to contact you to ask you to send in your results so that they can be assessed. When you’ve received your confirmation, you're ready to enrol with us. Details about when and where to enrol and starting your course will follow via email.

If you’ve not yet applied to university, you can apply now, but you'll need to complete a UCAS application in order to confirm any offer you receive.

We hope that you will join us at Westminster. However, if you’re holding a confirmed place with us and you now wish to be released from Westminster to accept a place at another university, you must request an official release. You can do this in the following way.

You'll need to sign in to UCAS Hub and click the "Decline my place" button. You will then be taken to a page with three options in a drop-down list. Depending on which option you select, you will be presented with different advice and guidance on your next steps. The options are:

  • I want to go to my insurance choice
  • I no longer wish to go to university this year
  • I want to apply somewhere else in Clearing

If you choose "I want to apply somewhere else in Clearing", you will be given a warning to ensure you wish to proceed.

When you confirm that you wish to be released into Clearing, UCAS will send you an email to let you know this has been actioned.
