About the centre
Established in 2023, the Centre for Social Justice Research (CSJR) sets out to understand contemporary social inequalities and challenge the power relations and institutions that sustain them in order to bring about meaningful social change.
Themes
CSJR members are experts in the following areas of critical social science:
- prisons, probation, criminal justice, convict criminology
- gender studies, queer theory, sexuality, embodiment
- race and racism, policing, religion, social class
- leisure studies, public space, gentrification
- media activism, social movements
- migration and border regimes, terrorism studies, trafficking, organised crime
- family studies, young people, juvenile justice
- sex education and sexual harm
- education, critical pedagogies, prisoner education

Research projects
Projects at the CSJR have attracted funding from organisations including the British Academy, Economic and Social Research Council, Leverhulme Trust, Barrow-Cadbury Trust and ACAS.
Collaborations
The CSJR is interested in pursuing collaborations with civil society organisations who are engaged in struggles for social justice and social change.
Doctoral research
We support an active and vibrant postgraduate research community and welcome applications for doctoral study that centre the issues of social justice and social change.
