Throughout the 2022-23 academic year, students from the School of Arts received a variety of learning resources that helped further their knowledge and thrive in their modules.

The School is home to the Centre for Research and Education in Art and Media (CREAM), one of the most successful and highly rated Arts research centres in the UK. In the Research Exercise Framework 2014, CREAM achieved the highest ranking of any institution for a broad range of art and design research, with 45% of its research judged to be ‘world-leading’ and 63% deemed to be ‘world-leading’ in its impact.

CREAM has 30 researchers and over 50 PhD students who have created a portfolio of research across the disciplines of Ceramics, Visual Arts, Photography, Film, Experimental Media, Music and Fashion. It is London’s leading research centre in Visual and Media Srts, Design and Music and one of the top six such centres in the UK.

It offers valuable resources to students and offers doctoral researchers lively seminars, guest speaker events, ground-breaking conferences and symposia in collaboration with other institutions.

Students also have the opportunity to use the Emerging Media Space (EMS), which encompasses four key areas: research, creating, storing and learning. Students can come and use facilities and equipment in their own time to learn more about their subject as well as seek support from staff to use specific equipment such as 3D printers or 2D Craft Workstations. The EMS also holds programmes, events and workshops to help enrich students' learning throughout their time at Westminster and provides a place where students can take out equipment and store items in lockers.

Westminster students also have access to an extensive library and library guide where they can find academic skills training, free software as well as ebooks and ejournals. Along with this there is a wide range of Records and Archives that can be used by students and lecturers.

Courses in the school include Graphic Design BA Honours, Animation BA Honours, Contemporary Media Practice BA Honours, Illustration BA Honours and Photography BA Honours, all of which are still available on Clearing with an option of taking a foundation year.

Stephen Hall, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader on the Graphic Design BA Honours course, said: “Excellent learning resources form an integral part of our Graphic Design students consistently high calibre achievements and outcomes. From our state-of-the-art Emerging Media Space examining the potential of tomorrow's technology today, to our wonderful process areas and large spacious well-lit classrooms, our students' creative curiosity and skills are able to flourish and shine."

Emma Dodson, Course Leader on the Illustration BA Honours course, added: “The positive NSS results are reflective of a great cohort of students who were determined to make the absolute most of the resources and support available. Staff were able to nurture the creative practice of each individual student as they moved through the course and working side by side in the studio has provided a competitive, yet supportive environment and allowed students to grow and learn from each other, pushing them to produce some exciting and innovative illustration.”
