Westminster, in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), hosted a study day for both secondary school and college students to introduce them to the architecture profession, and the career and study opportunities available.

The study day was organised by Ivy Edemafaka, graduate of the Architecture Postgraduate Diploma Professional Practice RIBA Part III course and a Part III and Architecture BA Honours course mentor, and Wilfred Achille, Chartered Architect and Co-Course Leader in Architecture (Part III). The session aimed to introduce year 11, 12 and 13 students to what architecture is, what studying Architecture at university or doing an apprenticeship is like, and the potential career opportunities available.

As part of their study day, the students embarked on a drawing tour, were offered portfolio tips and interview preparation, and visited the University of Westminster’s architecture studios and Fabrication Lab, a specialist lab focused on emerging technologies for architecture and the built environment at the University’s Marylebone Campus.

The students also took part in a model-making session and Wilfred Achille gave a presentation showing one of his past estate remodelling architectural projects. He then took part in a Q&A session about his project exploring how architecture can make a real difference in people's lives.

Speaking about the study day, Wilfred Achille said: “It is so important to be able to not only see what it takes to be an architect but that they come from many different backgrounds, and anyone can be one.”
