Westminster’s Institute for Healthy Urban Living hosts bioeconomy mentoring event in collaboration with BioLadies Network

The Institute of Healthy Urban Living (IHUL) teamed up with the BioLadies Network to give Westminster students the opportunity to meet a range of inspirational potential mentors from the bioeconomy industry and discuss various career pathways in the sector.

The IHUL hosted the mentoring evening with the BioLadies Network on 1 October for students interested in the bioindustry sector. Experienced guests spoke to students about the value of having a mentor and shared their diverse career journeys in the bioeconomy.

Around 30 students attended the event and provided positive feedback, encouraging the IHUL to plan similar events in the future.

The BioLadies Network is a community of professionals which welcome individuals of all genders and has representation from the full range of the bioeconomy. Members provide a supportive environment and help each other in various ways including mentoring, introductions, personal development and career advice.

The IHUL works with external parties to improve health and wellbeing in large cities around the world and offers opportunities for innovation and collaboration aimed at sustainable and socially integrated advancements in urban health and wellbeing. With a solid foundation in established research and education, the IHUL unites Westminster’s twelve schools to provide an interdisciplinary approach to addressing urban health challenges in the UK and worldwide.

Professor Brendon Noble, Director of the IHUL, said: “We are delighted to have hosted the BioLadies Network for discussions and to have made a contribution to our students’ futures. We will definitely organise more events of this type.”

This event directly contributed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
