In June, Westminster Working Cultures (WWC) UK partnered with Santander Universities UK to offer undergraduate students the unique opportunity to hear from a diverse range of inspiring alumni speakers and partner organisations and were guided in their journey to become work-ready, confident and successful graduates.

Over the five-day programme, 38 participants engaged in 15 speaker sessions, meeting 30 Westminster alumni, partners and students. Attendees had the chance to ask questions and join interactive workshops designed to connect, upskill and inspire. Through engaging with WWC UK guest speakers and activities, participants received important workplace guidance in areas such as how to be authentic, deal with burnout, manage their mental health, work in project management and find their passions.

This programme was made possible by the generous funding support from Santander Universities UK and the Quintin Hogg Trust. It was organised by the WWC team within the Alumni Relations Office.

With talks from esteemed alumni, visits with Chancellor’s Circle Members: the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation and the International Professional Security Association, and a day trip to Cambridge to explore the local working culture, students were able to find strength outside of their comfort zones and meet role models that reflected their challenges and life experiences. Speakers showcased the working cultures of sectors such as Journalism, Design, Private Security and Advertising, as well as the best routes into each one.

About their experience with WWC UK Wiktoria Zielinska, a Biochemistry BSc Honours student, said: “I cannot say enough about how incredible this programme has been for me. I came with a willingness to network, meet new people, make valuable and meaningful relationships and gain an understanding of prospects for career development, but I experienced so much more. Even though the programme ran for only five days, by the end, it felt like the relationships we formed were strong and long-lasting, which we plan to keep after the programme. It was incredible to hear the speakers' stories, get many different perspectives on career development, ask questions, gain valuable advice and network after sessions. I feel much more confident in networking and speaking to people after the programme, which is another example of the advice we have received during sessions - to do things we're scared of and get out of our comfort zone.”

Renata Drumond, Director at Renata Drumond Interior Design, said: “Participating as a speaker at the WWC UK June programme was a profoundly enriching experience. Engaging with the students and sharing insights from my career journey was not only a privilege but also a wonderful opportunity to discuss the universal aspects of professional development across industries. The enthusiasm and curiosity of the students were truly inspiring, making the event a highlight of my year.”

WWC UK is designed to support Westminster students' professional skills development and global outlook and is part of a wider programme of activity, including WWC International. The programme has hosted 15 programmes and numerous events since its launch in 2020, featuring a range of successful alumni and partner organisations with over 500 Westminster students and recent graduates participating. Upcoming WWC activities will take place in September 2024.

This programme contributed towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education and 10: Reduced Inequalities. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
