Westminster Working Cultures Professional hosts partnership event with Westminster International University in Tashkent

On Saturday 30 October, forty current students and recent graduates at the University of Westminster and Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) attended a virtual event to learn about the professional landscape, career opportunities, and working life in the Central Asian labour market.

WIUT is the first international university located in the heart of Central Asia to offer fully accredited UK qualifications. The University of Westminster and WIUT share a strong partnership with regular collaboration across teaching and research, and take great pride in their alumni who have made significant contributions in numerous ways to the global labour market.

The event gave participants a chance to learn from and network with a range of successful Central Asian alumni from Westminster and WIUT, who have established themselves professionally in various Central Asian countries after their studies.

The event welcomed a panel of four speakers, including WIUT Business Administration BA graduate and Director at MSC TASHKENT LLC Shakhnoza Mirkhaydarova; Social Media, Culture and Society MA graduate and Senior Web Editor at Indigo Magazine David Chikhladze; International Business and Development MA graduate and CEO at Social Entrepreneurial Corporation ‘Almaty’ Askar Billisbekov; and Business Administration BA/Marketing Communications MA graduate and Business Trainer in Marketing Bakhtier Tukhtaev.

Highlights from the speaker discussions included how holding a degree from the University of Westminster and WIUT has set them apart from other graduates in the Central Asian labour market; the importance of building a strong online presence and personal brand in today’s virtual world; and how to leverage the competitive edge acquired with a UK-accredited degree when navigating the labour markets of Central Asian countries such as Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan.

Professor Alex Hughes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Employability and Global Engagement, said: “I am delighted that our WWC Professional event was such a success, and that it enabled us to add such a rich new dimension to our exceptional and longstanding partnership with WIUT. Our relationship will be twenty years old next year, and goes from strength to strength. WWC is a wonderful addition to our institutional collaboration.”

WWC Professional is part of a wider programme of activity, including WWC International and WWC UK designed to support the employability skills development and global outlook of Westminster students. This programme was made possible by the generous funding support from the Quintin Hogg Trust and was organised by the WWC team within the Alumni Relations Office. Upcoming WWC Professional events in 2021 will focus on the labour markets of India, China and Singapore.
