Digital Marketing BA Honours students have gained hands-on experience working with real-life client Blakademik. The collaboration provided students with the opportunity to develop and apply social media marketing skills through authentic assessments, giving them an insight into the professional world.
The module incorporated practical formats designed to engage students and enhance their skillsets. They had the chance to deliver work based on a live brief and engage with a Q&A session. These components allowed students to gain insight into the client’s objectives and challenges while refining their understanding of professional expectations.
Another highlight of the module was the World Café format session. This was an interactive and practical session where students worked alongside Blakademik and mentors from both industry and academia. During the session, students were tasked with a two-hour challenge to research the target audience, identify the most suitable social media platform, develop a marketing message and produce a social media video tailored to the client’s needs. The client was present in the classroom, providing real-time feedback on the students’ work, making the experience both collaborative and dynamic.
Among the participating students was Gloria Stanovnik, a second-year Digital Marketing BA Honours student. She said: “I feel fortunate to have had the chance to work with a real-life client this semester. It has been an inspiring experience that helped me better understand how social media can be leveraged to drive meaningful conversations and effectively engage Blakademik’s audience.”
Lecturer Maria Bortnovskaya, Module Leader for the Social Media Marketing module, highlighted the value of client involvement, stating: “Based on student feedback, bringing clients into the classroom makes learning more exciting and motivating, as students know that a real business will review and consider their work.”
The module is supported by Westminster Enterprise Network (WeNetwork), the University’s entrepreneurial network that brings together students and recent graduates with industry to develop their entrepreneurial skills, engage in self-employment work and create businesses. The team helps connect students with the world of work to solve real-world problems and widen participation in entrepreneurship, enterprise opportunities and education.
This course directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4: Quality Education and 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
