Westminster students gain industry insights at What Comes Next? events

The University of Westminster has hosted two panel events in its What Comes Next? (WCN) series. Taking place across the University’s campuses, the sessions gave students studying on Westminster’s range of Psychology, Accounting and Finance courses a chance to learn about post-graduation opportunities, gain industry insights and receive practical advice on life after graduation.

What Comes Next? Psychology event

The first event focusing on Psychology took place on 5 February at Westminster’s Regent Campus. Expertly chaired by Chantal Gautier, Senior Lecturer and Sexologist at the University of Westminster, the event was attended by Psychology BSc Honours students, including those combining their studies with Counselling, Criminology or Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience.

During the event, a panel of Westminster alumni and industry experts shared their experiences and offered insights into navigating life after university. Attendees then participated in a social networking session where students could speak directly with the alumni guests and ask them specific questions.

About the event one student commented: “I found this career panel invaluable and I appreciate both the chance to attend and ask questions. I also like that the session was recorded so that I can go back and listen to certain parts I found most useful.’’

Another added: ‘’It was a good experience attending the event as I could understand career options better. They also reminded me not to be too hard on myself and to stay on track.’’

The second event focusing on Accounting and Finance took place on 20 February at Westminster’s Marylebone Campus and saw four Finance and Accounting BSc Honours alumni make up the panel. The event was hosted by Dr Sudha Mathew, Senior Lecturer for Accounting and Finance, and saw 76 students in attendance. Throughout the session students had the chance to ask a range of questions to help support their future plans and network with the wider Westminster community.

About the event one student said: “The speakers gave great tips and useful information on how to land internships and permanent roles.”

Another added: “Thank you for giving up your time, this event was super useful to me as a first-year student who is interested in the industry but still has a lot to learn.”
The WCN programme was introduced as a course-aligned event series in 2021 aimed at sharing the knowledge of recent graduates with current students by inviting them back to speak at the University. WCN events allow students to learn about the career options available after graduation and network with alumni in a relaxed, familiar environment.

James Huke, Alumni Relations Officer at the University of Westminster, added: “A massive thank you to our panels for their honesty and amazing advice. Your experiences are invaluable, and your willingness to impart knowledge exemplifies the Westminster values and makes a big difference to our students’ journeys.’’

These events directly contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.

A recording of the events can be found on the Alumni YouTube channel.
