Ten final-year students studying on the Biomedical Science Bsc Honours course took part in a field trip funded by the Quintin Hogg Trust (QHT) to attend a conference organised by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany between 24th to 28th April 2023. The field trip was led by Dr Joan Liu and Dr Adele McCormick, Senior Lecturers and International Co-Leads for the School of Life Sciences.
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a prominent hub for ground-breaking research in Life Sciences. With 28 member states, EMBL has more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering the spectrum of molecular biology at six sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Rome, and EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, Cambridge, UK. The conference aimed to bring together neuroscientists and experts in genome regulation to explore the many ways by which the genome is regulated in the brain in order to support neural function and plasticity.
The conference sessions covered a broad range of experimental approaches and model systems, from biochemistry to single-cell genomics, from worms to human organoids.
The students were able to observe the incredible working of advanced, state-of-the-art genomic and imaging technologies, and practise key employability skills such as poster presentation and networking whilst at the conference. The students also met with Westminster alumni, Jana Christopher, and Karin Dumstrei, a Senior Editor at EMBO journal in Heidelberg and took part in a stimulating, and insightful session learning about Data Integrity in Modern Science.
The students were also able to enjoy and explore different aspects of German culture including a visit to Sammlung Prinzhorn Museum where they were introduced to an impressive and meticulous collection of artwork made by patients with various psychiatric disorders from the 19th century to present time.
Speaking about their experience on the field trip, one of the students commented: “The networking opportunities enabled me to connect with like-minded professionals who share a passion for unravelling the mysteries of the brain. I was also able to explore the beautiful city of Heidelberg and had the chance to try out local dishes, explore the Prinzhorn Collection, and visit the Old Bridge.”
Another student added: “It was an extraordinary experience that greatly enriched my professional journey.”
