The Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers is a non-profit organisation which aims to challenge and inspire people of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) origin to make enhanced contributions in their respective fields, as well as adding value to their communities using engineering as a platform.

They also aim to encourage and support students who aspire to be successful engineers, as well as promote engineering in schools and diversity in the workplace. Their objective is to increase the engineering talent in the UK and drive the economic growth.

Their live engineering conference included leading engineers, visionaries, start-up founders, CEOs and managers getting together to showcase UK innovation. One of the speakers at the conference was Yewande Akinola MBE, a Visiting Professor at the University of Westminster. Professor Yewande is an established engineer, communicator and sustainability advocate, specialising in innovation and the manufacturing of systems, and an Honorary Fellow at the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Attendees of the conference were able to learn more about the UK engineering industry alongside other enriching topics such as perceptions of engineering, social mobility, employability, and racial parity in engineering.

Okikiayo David, one of the undergraduate students who attended the conference, commented on the event: “This was a truly inspiring and insightful opportunity to hear the varying stories of people in the engineering and tech industry and how differently they have navigated their lives. I really enjoyed the networking sessions too! As I continue in my studies, I look forward to attending more events like this and possibly finding an internship/ placement.”
