Art works from Westminster students have been put on display in the newly refurbished Cavendish Library. The six pieces were chosen by FOLIO and the library team out of a number of creations from students from the College of Design, Creative and Digital Industries (DCDI).

Artworks by students at Cavendish Campus

Emma Stevenson, FOLIO Assistant Technician, and Sarah Maule, Development, Planning and Operations Lead, with Salina Amin Aziz, Development and Planning Assistant, oversaw the project. The artworks came from students across Photography, Fashion Design, Fine Art and Graphics courses. The students could submit images, photography, illustrations and other artworks, as long as their art suited the theme of the subjects taught on Cavendish Campus. Each successful applicant received a £50 voucher beside their work being displayed.

Talking about the selected pieces, Emma Stevenson said: "It's been a great opportunity for students from DCDI to showcase their artworks across the University's library spaces. We were overwhelmed by the quantity of talented submissions from students on FOLIO, it was so hard for us to narrow it down to just six! The chosen artworks brighten and elevate the library space, bringing students together."

The six pieces displayed include Fashion Illustrations by Marina Lorenzo Blue from the Fashion Design BA course, The Beauty of Death as an Art by Tanya Hennessey from the Photography BA course, 36 types-36daysoftype Compilation by Nikita Goryainov from the Graphic Communication Design BA course, Neither Here Nor There and Pink Fantasy by Photography BA student Angela Crosti, and Lifeguard by Elroy Stone from the Fine Art Mixed Media BA course.

"Displaying student artworks into all library spaces has been something we have wanted to achieve for a long time now. Students love to see their fellow students work, and it encourages a sense of community and connections. The pieces chosen are inspirational, eye catching and thought provoking and we hope to introduce artworks in Marylebone Library soon." said Sarah Maule.

The pieces were submitted onto FOLIO, a platform where Art and Design students can showcase their works. The submissions can still be viewed on the platform by searching the hashtag #LIBRARYARTCOMP in the search bar. The platform was developed by Andre Pinkowski, Course Leader of the Photography BA course and Academic Lead of Folio, and is managed by Emma Stevenson. FOLIO allows students to present and share their work online, while exploring the creations of other students across different disciplines.

Students have the opportunity to build both an online portfolio and an electronic journal for the entire duration of their studies, providing a space to showcase their work in progress and develop Westminster’s online artistic community. FOLIO also publishes news articles, calls for job opportunities, competitions, exhibitions, events and awards. Since its launch, almost 20,000 pieces of work and nearly 15,000 journal entries have been uploaded by around 2000 users.
